About The Job

Are you passionate about improving people’s lives and transforming the way they work through teaching and mentoring? Do you enjoy the design, development and delivery of creative DevOps solutions while working on team-based projects? Join the American Airlines team as a DevOps Navigator Coach to help teams solve their most complex and interesting business problems. We love people who are invigorated by new challenges, seek out new learning opportunities, challenge the status quo and develop the skills of team members through technical and professional mentoring. As the a DevOps Navigator coach, you will coach and mentor assigned teams and be the go-to experts on DevOps methods and best practices.


Specifically, you’ll do the following:

  • Serve as the go-to expert on DevOps practices, methods, culture and collaboration and challenge team members to use a disciplined approach to their work.
  • Deliver a training program that aligns with the DevOps Transformation strategic direction.
  • Educate assigned teams on the best use of DevOps tools, advise on build and deployment processes to ensure best practices, and help drive toward platform automation.
  • Recognize organizational and team-level challenges and address those with management in a timely fashion.
  • Change mindsets to adopt a DevOps culture, including collaboration practices, through training and coaching.
  • Partner with other DevOps specialty coaches (Agile, DevOps Engineering, Testing Automation) to deliver a complete solution for a team’s challenges.


Required Qualifications

  • BS degree in computer science or similar degree (software engineering, information systems / technology).
  • 6 years of progressively responsible software engineering and/or DevOps experience.
  • 3 years of experience in leading teams or equivalent.
  • 3 years of experience in leading or coaching teams in DevOps practices or equivalent.
  • 3 years of experience with implementing and operating DevOps tools/platforms across some part of the development lifecycle.
    • These could include but may not be limited to Pivotal Cloud Foundry, GitHub, Jenkins, Maven, Nexus, Hygieia, SonarQube, New Relic, Continuous Delivery pipelines, or other similar tools.
  • 3 years’ hands-on experience with DevOps practices such as TDD, BDD, refactoring, automation, or continuous integration.

Preferred Qualifications

  • 2 - 3 years DevOps training and coaching experience a plus.
  • Ability to coach and mentor others on various build and deployment practices as well as DevOps principles and guide programmers/developers on technical issues as needed to deliver quality business value faster.
  • Demonstrated growth mindset, enthusiastic about learning new technologies quickly and applying the gained knowledge to address business problems.
  • Deep infrastructure experience delivering and operating either virtualized on-premises or public cloud services in a large-scale production environment (for example: network, security, or deployment automation).
  • Familiar with microservices architecture.
  • Knowledge of agile development frameworks (for example: Scrum, Kanban, XP, or SAFe) a plus.
  • Strong focus on having a bias toward action.
  • Strong decision-making and analytical abilities.
  • Highly developed sense of integrity and commitment to customer satisfaction.
  • Demonstrate strong oral and written communication skills, with the ability to communicate technical topics to management and non-technical audiences.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Work well with multiple cross-functional teams to produce an end-to-end offering.
  • Ability to identify when /where flow of work is impeded.
  • Ability to assess agility needs and make recommendations based on team needs.
  • Proven ability to work well under pressure.
