Amgen's Safety Pharmacology and Animal Resource Center (SPARC) based in Thousand Oaks, CA is currently seeking a Senior Associate to join the Integrated Vivarium Management (IVM) team. The Senior Associate will assist in the oversight of operations of the animal facility, partner with Amgen staff and ensure inspection readiness (such as AAALAC, USDA, IACUC). Specific responsibilities include:
  • Overseeing scheduling coverage including weekends, holidays and on-call.
  • Supervising externally-sourced husbandry partners.
  • Participating in the development and implementation of aligned policies and procedures in animal care and facility operations including applying welfare regulations to assure compliance with institutional policies and regulations.
  • Serving as a strong safety advocate within the vivarium space and reporting safety issues.
  • Coordinate the planning and oversight of facility renovation and maintenance activities including work order management and follow up.
  • Monitoring building environmental parameters and reporting deviations.
  • Inspecting housing and procedure spaces and coordinating the movement of animals throughout and between facilities.
  • Participating in the development of training programs for laboratory technicians in husbandry and technical procedures.
  • Understanding of facility and site business continuity plans including role in disaster and business continuity/recovery activities.
  • Maintaining inspection ready facilities and documentation for AAALAC and USDA compliance.
  • Reporting issues related to decontamination procedures, water chlorination, water quality testing and facility sanitation quality testing (RODAC, ATP).
  • Providing communication regarding facility utilities, infrastructure, process equipment and supply chain and house system issues to SPARC management and other stakeholders.
  • Contributing to site-specific and functional area operational procedures and objectives.


Basic Qualifications:

Master's degree

OR

Bachelor's degree and 2 years of related scientific experience

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in animal science or related scientific field
  • Three years of professional experience in vivarium operations.
  • Two years supervision experience in vivarium operations.
  • Knowledge of husbandry operations and physical plant systems.
  • Certification by AALAS at the LATG level.
  • ILAM graduate and/or CMAR certification.
  • Strong leadership, communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Experience working with discovery researchers and broad understanding of how operations can impact science.
  • Knowledge of training program development and experience conducting hands on training of staff in operations processes.
  • Competency with database, spreadsheet and presentation applications (Excel, PowerPoint preferred).
  • Familiarity with facility management systems (such as eSirius, Edstrom Watchdog, Building Automation Systems).
  • Knowledge in lean management and 5S practices.
