Position Purpose

To independently set up and monitor experiments in progress.



Skills & Knowledge
  • Highly competent in several laboratory methods, procedures, and techniques as well as the equipment and instruments. Experience with histological and imaging procedures.
  • Ability to work independently and apply critical thinking and sound judgement.
  • Ability to manage laboratory inventory and records.
  • Good organizational and time management skills.
  • Editorial skills, and record of publications, for preparation of reports.
  • Willingness to work with/be exposed to hazardous materials such as radioactive materials, infectious materials, and/or hazardous chemicals.
  • Knowledge of computers and software applications.
  • Knowledge of standard computer software packages for data analysis and presentation, and on-line literature search engines, skilled hands, and good judgment.
  • Strong commitment to a diverse working environment and to serving the needs of a large and diverse community.


Minimum Experience
  • One year of relevant laboratory/research experience.


Minimum Education
  • Bachelor's degree with a major in one of the biological sciences or the equivalent.

This position is a 12-month term position.

This position is funded by a grant. Continuation is based upon available funds.

Key Accountabilities
Key Accountabilities

Research/Experiments

  • Independently sets up and monitors optogenetics and chemogenetics experiments in progress.
  • Identifies, troubleshoots, and corrects or recommends solutions to problems associated with experimental design; methods, procedures, and techniques; or equipment and facilities.
  • As necessary, develops and/or implements new or modified research methods, procedures, and techniques to meet the unique requirements of assigned research problems.
  • Adheres to laboratory safety requirements including general and chemical/hazardous waste safety disposal methods.

Records

  • Maintains laboratory records or procedures.
  • May assist in preparing laboratory reports.
  • Records experimental data from research using graphs, logs, charts, and statistical summaries.
  • May perform limited library research and reference work for background materials.

Data Collection/Preparation

  • Collects, analyzes, and interprets data resulting from experimentation.
  • Prepares appropriate and understandable representations of data such as graphs.

Miscellaneous

  • Assists in the maintenance of transgenic rat colonies including weighing of animals, setting up pairs of animals for mating, and entering data into spreadsheets.
  • Assists in surgical procedures on rats.
  • Communicates respectfully with a diverse community.

Laboratory

  • Schedules and monitors utilization of laboratory facilities, equipment, and supplies.
  • Monitors equipment and instrument performance; obtains necessary maintenance and repair.
  • Orders and maintains stock of laboratory supplies.
  • Monitors work-in-progress to ensure accomplishment is timely and in accordance with reasonable methods and standards.
  • Instructs others in laboratory methods, procedures, and techniques and provides technical guidance and direction as required.
  • Provides technical direction to laboratory technicians and student workers.
