About The Job

The Unified Communications/Voice architect will be part of the Enterprise Network Services organization, working in a team of engineers and architects focused on hardware, software, systems level research, and architecture aspects of next generation of Unified Communications.


The candidate must be proficient at the techniques that go into the formulation of architectures, including requirements discovery and analysis, application of abstraction, formulation of solution context, solution alternatives identification and assessment, technology selection, and architectural configuration.


This requires practical skills and experience with many application and infrastructure products, technologies, and services. The Vocie architect must also be proficient in exercising technical leadership which requires the ability to accept responsibility for the success of the architecture of a project, coordinate resources that are often not directly under their control, and provide the support necessary to ensure overall success. Must have applied knowledge in the engagement of complex projects, including efforts that require cross-organizational/vendor coordination. This job requires demonstrated expertise of how to apply architectural thinking to mission, strategy, and vision in innovative ways that deliver positive impact and results to the business. Must be able to evaluate the relevance and currency of IT and Telephony and Unified Communications implementations and architectures in a changing business environment and in the context of enterprise and technology governance.

Specifically, you’ll do the following:

  • Create, design and document vision, standards, policies, patterns, architectures, designs, and roadmaps for Telephony and Unified Communications technologies.
  • Architect and design Telephony, Unified Communications, and Radio technologies that produce benefit to the corporation.
  • Create detailed telephony designs that meet the customer requirements (including physical and logical) of complex network systems to meet the functional objectives of the business. 
  • Lead, mentor, review and validate work assignments for architects and engineers while removing barriers that prevent productivity 
  • Responsible for leading and directing an implementation team for deployment of complex Telephony systems in extremely high visibility, mission critical sites for business operations.  
  • Provide technical leadership to infrastructure and applications/systems development teams to advance infrastructure technology.  Utilizing knowledge of multiple technologies and platforms, provide technical design recommendations.
  • Takes responsibility for personal and team technical and professional growth.  Serves as a technical resource providing guidance and advice to voice capabilities for utilizing the full capability of technology in designing effective solutions.  Provides technical assistance and follow through to team members on complex problems.  Review design and development work, instructing team members as needed. 
  • Refine ability to combine knowledge of business environment with the architecture of technology solutions.  Evaluate possible implementation of new technology, consistent with the goal of improving existing systems and technologies and in meeting the needs of the business.
  • Maintains a strong knowledge of IT systems and Voice and Unified Communications architectures.  Research, collect and disseminate information on emerging technologies and key learning throughout the IT organization.

  • Participate in early stage hardware & software architecture definition, and prototype evaluation with a concentration on Unified Communications Architecture
  • Plan and implement the migration of legacy Unified Communications tools to the corporate standard.
  • All aspects of collaboration connectivity enterprise wide, including Web Conferencing, Video, Voice, Instant messaging, configuration, installation, maintenance, and monitoring.
  • Extend and manage the global VOIP infrastructure to provide Voice over WAN intra-site dialing, and an AD-integrated global dialing directory. Provide a sustainable, scalable, highly available voice infrastructure. Manage the global Web and integrated Video Conferencing services solution and facilitate the training of IT support staff to ensure a high level of customer satisfaction.
  • Vendor management responsibilities including negotiation of contracts/renewals to ensure best value (service levels vs. cost), including the RFP process to select providers/partners.
  • Manage the Unified Communications components of Disaster Recovery and BCRS activities.
  • Maintain technology currency and liaise with the external environment to identify opportunities to leverage technology to the benefit of the business

Required Qualifications

  • B.S. Computer Science, Telecom, Engineering, or related discipline
  • Strong technical knowledge of VoIP/IP telephony systems, PBXs, Radio, voice mail, ACD’s, interactive voice services, call management systems, and telecommunications accounting systems
  • 8+ years of progressive Telecom, Voice Engineering, and Unified Communications experience including instant messaging and soft phones, with integrated calendaring, web, audio and video conferencing
  • Strong hands on knowledge of SIP, H.323 (IP), H.320 (ISDN), TCP/IP
  • Session Border Controller (SONUS, Acme Packet, Cisco, etc)
  • Telephony Traffic and Engineering (Erlangs, Trunks, Blockage, etc)
  • Technical knowledge of PSTN, VoIP, T1/PRI, MPLS, Frame Relay, ATM, ISDN and systems interconnectivity
  • SIP Architecture Integration
  • Experience working with the following platforms, Nortel, Cisco, Avaya, NEC, SIPx and Sonus hardware and management tool experience, Cisco Unity voicemail integration with Microsoft Exchange/Outlook and Cisco tools and services, including but not limited to Cisco Jabber, Cisco WebEx/Teams, Cisco Telepresence.
  • Strong understanding of VoIP QoS issues and mitigation strategies (G711, G729, etc)

  • DNS/ENUM and Dialing Plan
  • Experience deploying and supporting Unified Communications collaboration tools using integrated voice, video, and data architectures such as Cisco WebEx, Microsoft Teams, and Zoom
  • Experience with telecom/data carrier provisioning, billing, and troubleshooting procedures
  • In depth experience with VoIP networking and technical proficiency in LAN/WAN architectures
  • Experience with current best practices in IT standards, principles, and security practices 
  • Excellent communications, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills with a track record as a problem solver & an effective team player is essential
  • Flexible person with the ability to manage stressful situations and adapt to changing environments.
  • Act as the liaison between IT verticals, vendors, the business, and the network team
  • Proactively recommend courses of action to maintain cost effectiveness and competitiveness
  • Desire to work in a fast-paced environment. 
  • Ability to plan requirements three to five years in advance
  • Lead both technical and non-technical discussions
  • Proven ability to build and facilitate relationships at all levels of the organization, both internally and externally
  • 10+ years of progressive experience and familiarity with current and emerging networking and collaboration technologies.
