An Operations Coordinator (Engineering Physicist III) is being sought to join the PIP2IT Core Commissioning Planning and Execution Team to coordinate activities in support of PIP2IT installation and commissioning, cryomodule testing, and later Proton Improvement Plan-II (PIP-II) commissioning. PIP-II is a large multi-faceted and multi-national project that will construct a new superconducting linear accelerator on the Fermilab site to provide powerful, high intensity proton beams to the laboratory's experiments.

The selected candidate will report to and receive direction from the PIP-II Commissioning L3 manager. In addition, during preparation for and during cryomodule testing, the selected candidate will receive concurrent direction from the PIP-II SRF/Cryo L2 Manager.

You Will
  • Participate in meetings of the PIP2IT Core Commissioning Planning and Execution Team during PIP2IT commissioning
  • Plan, schedule and coordinate operation, maintenance, and repairs of hardware at PIP2IT and later in the CM Test Cave.
  • Plan and coordinate control room activities based on a test plan
  • Organize, maintain, and if necessary, develop test, operational, and emergency procedures, guidelines, and call lists. Make sure they are available at the PIP2IT control room and communicated to the Main Control Room when necessary.
  • Develop and maintain the PIP2IT and CM test weekly shift schedule based on the weekly commissioning plan.
  • Once authorized to do so, train operators and maintain the list of authorized operators
  • Participate in shifts during PIP2IT commissioning and cryomodule testing and conduct testing as guided by a test plan if it will be necessary
  • Proactively assist in related manpower-intensive activities. Assist system owners with ORCs. Assist with installation and hardware testing activities if this does not interfere with main responsibilities listed above.
  • Abide by and are responsible for performing all duties in accordance with all environmental, health and safety regulations and practices pertinent to this position.

We Are Looking For
  • Bachelor's Degree in Physics or Engineering, or an equivalent combination of technical education, training, and experience in a related discipline
  • Must have a minimum of 5 years' relevant work experience in accelerator operations, maintenance, and planning
  • Must have demonstrated understanding of concepts of accelerator operations and engineering
  • Must have strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Must have ability to work a non-standard schedule and extended shifts. Work can require participation in rotating shifts (day, swing and owl shifts), including weekends.
  • Ability to work under limited supervision and use job knowledge and good judgment to make effective decisions
  • Ability to work closely with and communicate to PIP-II management, physicists, engineers, and personnel from other divisions to accomplish goals.
  • Demonstrated experience with development of operational procedures and technical documentation is a plus
  • Commitment to personal responsibility, safety and security; uses and promotes safe behaviors based on training and lessons learned
