Position Purpose

Helps achieve strategic communications goals of the College by performing a range of general communications assignments in support of key themes and messages as outlined in the Dartmouth strategic communications framework. Helps develop and implement fresh approaches and strategies for publicizing Dartmouth activities and research across media platforms. Manages broadcast studio media scheduling and invoicing. Assists with issues management and participates in occasional, 24/7 on-call studio support.

• Superior writing and editing skills.
• Skill in human relations; ability to work productively with constituencies including Dartmouth faculty, students, administrators, alumni, news people and the public.
• Familiarity with print, digital, and broadcast media; ability to target media vehicles appropriate to the message to be communicated.
• Ability to work effectively and accurately under tight deadlines and sometimes conflicting pressures.
• Commitment to fostering respectful communication and collaboration within a diverse community.

Minimum Experience

Three to five years experience in academic public relations role or related field.



Minimum Education

Bachelor's degree in journalism or communications or related field, or the equivalent combination of education and experience.

Key Accountabilities

Generating Positive Publicity
• Identifies and places news and feature stories in media outlets that advance the work of Dartmouth's faculty, in close collaboration with the dean of faculty, dean of the College, and colleagues in Dartmouth Communications.
• Finds opportunities for Dartmouth faculty to serve as experts and spokespeople on current events, issues, and topics of interest to the institution's key constituencies as well as the general public, including but not limited to interviews, op-ed placements, and speaking engagements.
• Cultivates relationships with top tier news organizations and other media outlets to facilitate faculty and feature placements.
• Builds relationships with faculty, constantly working to gain knowledge and understanding of their work and how it translates into opportunities for institutional advancement.
• Produces storytelling materials, including multimedia packages, news releases, social media ideas, and talking points for Dartmouth representatives and senior administrators.
• Develops written and/or multimedia materials related to faculty for Communications vehicles including the Dartmouth website in collaboration with the director of creative services and digital strategy.
• Takes initiative to use new technologies and mobilize student interns to expand media relations efforts.
• Coordinates annual Dartmouth Public Voices fellowship in partnership with the Op-Ed Project.

Issues Management
• As needed, helps manage issues in ways that advance the institution. Handles confidential, sensitive information, exercises excellent professional judgment and discretion, and interacts appropriately with Dartmouth constituencies that may include senior officers.
• Serves as Communications representative/College spokesperson when needed. Helps respond to inquiries regarding matters of a critical or urgent public interest nature. Researches details, effects necessary coordination, and develops responses appropriate for the time and circumstances.
• Serves on the Emergency Planning Group, representing Communications, and maintains/updates Office of Communications Emergency Plan.

Radio and Television Studio Management
• Responsible for booking interviews for external media outlets and internal or external guests, promoting studio use and availability on campus. Communicates interview details to all parties involved. Submits invoice information for non-Dartmouth studio users.
• Serves as department expert on operations and maintenance for studio equipment as well as technical liaison and troubleshooter with vendors. Suggests improvements and keeps informed of appropriate broadcast technology. Monitors consumable supplies and submits orders as needed.
• Assists staff from across the institution as well as individual frequent interviewees with their use of studios.
