Fermilab's Facilities Engineering Services Section builds and maintains mission-critical infrastructure and services from which high-energy physics research can be safely accomplished without interruption. We provide housing accommodations and logistics and property management. We work on projects that support all of the laboratory's facilities and experiments.

The Fermilab Facilities Engineering Services Section (FESS) seeks a highly motivated Mechanical Engineer candidate to join the Engineering Department. Under general direction, the selected candidate will perform engineering tasks, which includes research, design, and development of small to medium engineering projects or portions of large projects in compliance with all applicable local, state and federal regulations, requirements and standards and all DOE orders.

You Will:
  • Under the direction of a more senior engineer or scientist, plan and perform research, design and development of small/medium engineering projects and/or portions of large projects.
  • Develop drawings and specifications for various engineering projects. Plan projects from inception to completion and bring project(s) to operating status.
  • Receive general direction on smaller/routine projects and more specific instructions for more complex tasks. Some latitude for unreviewed action or decision.
  • Research/propose solutions to engineering problems.
  • Independently evaluate, select and apply standard engineering techniques, procedures and criteria to assignments which have clear and specified objectives.
  • Serve on safety panels or review committees to audit the documentation provided for other project installations along with the associated engineering analysis, as required.
  • Provides technical direction to less senior engineers, draftsmen, designers, engineering associates and technicians.
  • Identifies problems or tasks requiring engineering solutions and provides a thorough analysis of alternatives.
  • Assists in the development of cost estimates, monitoring and managing the budgetary obligations.

We Are Looking For:
  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering from an accredited institution with 3+ years of related professional experience OR master's degree in Mechanical Engineering with 1+ years of relevant experience.
  • The successful candidate will have experience and/or working exposure in one or more of the following related areas:
    • Design of HVAC Systems
    • Design of piping Systems
    • Design of plumbing systems and code experience
    • HVAC “Controls/DDC background desired
    • Experience with energy modeling/HVAC softwares, especially CDS-Trace desired
    • Exposure to Building Commissioning
    • Familiarity with ASHRAE and ASME code requirements and application for piping is desired
    • Working knowledge of building codes related to mechanical systems
  • Must have completed or the ability to complete Engineering In Training (EIT) certification, also known as the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam.
  • Successful completion or ability to complete the Professional Engineering (PE) Licensure in the State of Illinois is a plus.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with staff and stakeholders.
  • Ability to produce conceptual and final designs, specifications, cost estimates and bid documents for small to medium projects.
  • Skill in the preparation and delivery of graphic and data presentations.
  • Skill in the use of word processing, spreadsheet and scheduling software.
  • Proficient in the use of Computer Aided Design (CAD) software. AutoCAD or Revit software a plus.
  • Experience or exposure to Fire Protection or Life Safety Engineering applications is a plus.

  • Ability to occasionally work outside normal working hours.
  • Ability to conduct field investigations.
  • Ability to visit and traverse construction sites for quality assurance, safety oversight and issue resolution.
