Position Purpose

Reporting to the Company’s Senior Vice President, Global Government Affairs, the Managing Director of Environmental, Social and Governance will be responsible for building and executing an industry-leading sustainability program that reduces our environmental impact, matches or exceeds best practices for reporting, and facilitates external partnerships that build collaboration and learning.  The Managing Director will be a visible leader of our sustainability programs and will champion our work internally and externally with team members, the Board of Directors, non-profits, governments, industry associations, investors and other partners.

About The Job

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Strategy

  • Develop and drive implementation of the Company’s global sustainability strategy; build and achieve consensus internally on long-term roadmaps to achieve the Company’s sustainability goals

Communications and Engagement

  • Partner with Global Engagement to build and execute an integrated communications strategy to increase global awareness and recognition of American Airlines as a leader in sustainability
  • Align, inform, and inspire colleagues to help fulfill the Company’s strategic sustainability objectives by regularly communicating progress and asking for feedback on goals and initiatives; engage frontline team members and EBRGs on sustainability practices, policies and goals
  • Drive key partnerships, memberships and engagements with external partners that both support execution of the Company’s sustainability commitments and involve the Company in the ongoing development of public policy related to the airline industry and climate change

Governance and Reporting

  • Establish a governance and reporting framework for the Company’s sustainability work, to include a Sustainability Council comprised of representatives from across the Company to provide ongoing oversight and regular feedback
  • Partner with business units and functional areas to ensure implementation, engagement and alignment of sustainability initiatives company-wide; continually seek feedback internally and externally on the Company’s sustainability goals and execution
  • Track and report on progress towards the Company’s sustainability commitments; drive sustainability reporting; work with internal teams to respond to RFPs and to inquiries from investors and ratings organizations
  • Continuously assess evolving corporate responsibility and sustainability best practices and use relevant learning to improve the Company’s programs, impact and reporting
Qualifications
  • Highest standards of personal ethics and integrity
  • Bachelor’s Degree required; Master’s Degree in public policy, environmental policy or related field preferred
  • Minimum seven (7) years of experience leading team members
  • Minimum ten (10) of experience in environment, social and governance (ESG) policy, corporate sustainability and/or corporate responsibility
  • Demonstrated leadership experience in corporate responsibility or sustainability with a large organization
  • Broad knowledge of ESG, current industry trends and practices regarding corporate responsibility and sustainability
  • Excellent strategic planning skills and experience managing large, complex projects
  • Articulate and effective communicator/influencer in writing and presentation, including public speaking
  • Comfortable working with senior management and partners at all levels within the Company
  • Agent and manager of change; a strategic executive who seeks to break down barriers and identify new and more effective ways to accomplish goals
  • Ability to manage teams by influence, and to operate effectively in a matrixed and cross-functional environment
  • Able to represent the Company effectively in industry and multi-stakeholder coalitions, working groups and membership organizations
