Manager, Veteran Services - Central Campus

Essential Job Functions:
  • Provide college-wide leadership to Veteran Services to assure that the centers are serving with leading edge techniques and adhere to the highest standards of quality.
  • Supervise, coordinate, and direct all Veterans benefits counseling, educational planning, student success initiatives, retention, and completion activities college-wide.
  • Ensure consistent and uniform application of all functions, processes, and services within Veteran Services across the college.
  • Interview, select, train, supervise, and evaluate a diverse staff through the performance management system. Make appropriate staffing recommendations in accordance with College policies and procedures.
  • Manage the campus Veteran Services budgets, in\r\ncollaboration with the Coordinator.
  • Assist with certifying VA and Hazlewood educational benefits, as needed. Ensure that all Veterans benefits are completed within the 30-day requirement established by VA.
  • Run reports on students receiving Veteran benefits to ensure that students are coded correctly and receiving timely benefits through identifying opportunities for additional training needs.
  • Ensure that students are coded correctly and\r\nreceiving timely benefits and identify opportunities for additional training\r\nneeds.
  • Serve as the lead for all national and state reporting to the Veterans Administration, Texas Veterans Commission, Department of Defense, and Go Army, and other reporting entities, including but not limited to catalog submissions, Hazlewood reporting, VA Compliance Surveys, grade reporting.
  • Serve as the lead for the end-of-semester reporting and account reconciliation process to ensure that student accounts are accurately reported to the Veterans Administration.


Additional Job Functions:
  • Consult and collaborate with the Dean of Student Development Central to plan, implement, and evaluate the plans and services of the departments college-wide through data analysis. Submit monthly and annual written reports including professional improvement and growth activities.
  • Facilitate timely, professional communication and problem resolution strategies with students.
  • Maintains the data reporting on all students receiving Veterans benefits and office traffic.
  • Represent SJC with outside agencies (Veterans Administration and Texas Veterans Commission), educational institutions, internal departments, and professional organizations. Serve as department liaison and on campus/college committees as requested.


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Maintain a personal and professional commitment to the college values and the success of SJC and its students.
  • Must be team-oriented with the ability to work well with other staff and faculty members in the development and administration of programs within Student Development, as well as throughout the college.
  • Excellent oral & written communication, interpersonal, organizational and presentation skills as well as possess personal computer literacy.
  • Ability to manage numerous tasks simultaneously, as well as develop new projects and programs with little supervision.
  • Ability to safeguard sensitive and/or confidential information from intentional or unintentional disclosure.
  • Ability to meet deadlines for assigned reports and projects.
  • Ability to interview, select, train, supervise, and evaluate a diverse population of personnel.
  • Ability to provide feedback, support, and encouragement to staff members.
  • Ability to perform all the essential functions of the position.


Required Education:
  • Bachelor degree from a regionally accredited college / university required.

Preferred Education:
  • Master's degree preferred.

Required Experience:
  • 3 or more years of progressive supervisory and budget experience.
  • 3 or more years of experience providing various modes of educational planning (advising), counseling, student success and / or retention in a community college system.
  • Experience creating and fostering student success, retention and completion.

Preferred Experience:
  • 3 or more years of working with Veterans and Hazlewood educational benefits.
  • Budget management experience preferred.
  • Knowledge and experience\r\nwith Banner Student Systems or other student database software systems preferred.


Salary Grade: 25
