In an effort to advance its DEI strategy and programs, American Airlines is hiring a communications specialist who is a strategic thinker, creative writer and team player to help us communicate internally and externally around American’s DEI work. This role is part of a dynamic and collaborative team that helps shape the company's actions, as well as our engagement with internal and external stakeholders. The specialist reports to the Director of Public Affairs Communications and works closely with senior leaders in Global Engagement and other business units.

What you'll do
  • Maintains a thorough understanding of business needs – creating, updating and executing compelling communications strategies and advancing the company’s objectives around its Diversity, Equity and Inclusion strategy.    
  • Drafts content for an array of audiences and platforms, aimed at communicating our values and actions to team members, the communities we serve and stakeholders.
  • Assists the Director of Public Affairs Communications in developing and executing short- and long-term communications plans in a dynamic environment.
  • Partners with the Inclusion and Diversity team to story tell and showcase the work of the Employee Business Resource Groups at American, and advises on communications strategy and best practices.
  • Manages media inquiries and pitches stories, as well as helps develop and maintain relationships with stakeholders.
  • Supports rapid response communications related to area of focus, including through volatile and fast-moving issues with tight deadlines.
  • Assumes “on call” evening and weekend duties in conjunction with team calendar.
  • Ability to work in a fast paced, 24/7 environment to help lead American's effort.
All you'll need for success

Minimum Qualifications- Education & Prior Job Experience

  • Required minimum of 5 years relevant work experience in communications in a corporate or agency setting.
  • Bachelor’s degree in communications or relevant field, or equivalent experience / training.
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills, and experience in strategic communications planning.
  • Must have excellent time-management skills with the ability to handle multiple projects at the same time and meet deadlines effectively, efficiently and independently.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to adapt and respond quickly to changing landscapes and to work well under pressure and tight deadlines.
  • Team player with ability to work successfully at all levels of the organization.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft office software (Excel, Word, Outlook and PowerPoint).
  • Willingness to travel.
