The Legal Department of JPMorgan Chase is responsible for the provision of legal services and is organized by Practice Groups that support and conform to the firm's lines of business (LOBs). The Legal Department Control Management function reports directly to Legal’s Office of the General Counsel with a matrix reporting line into the firm wide Control Management organization.

This position resides within the Control Management Team in the Legal Department.  The Control Manager, as a member of the Control Management team, is responsible in executing the firm wide control framework in adherence to the Control and Operational Risk Evaluation (CORE) program firm wide Standards and Policy. The Control Manager will work toward ensuring appropriate and effective controls are in place and are working as designed to ensure the continuing integrity, relevance and proper performance of the control environment to minimize any risk exposure to Legal and the firm.

The position requires strong knowledge and background in control management as well as familiarity with Compliance and/or Audit related best practices. The candidate will be expected to apply the firm wide oversight and controls framework and protocols for strengthening the control environment within CORE, KRI and KPI identification, creation, monitoring and reporting, serve as a subject matter expert for issue and action plan management, and apply knowledge and experience from the firm’s legacy risk control self-assessment (RCSA) program, specifically operational risk identification and controls testing and substantiation. 


All candidates for roles in the Legal department must successfully complete a Conflicts of Interest clearance review prior to commencement of employment.

  • Execute and influence the further development of Legal’s Operational Risk strategy and driving the Control Management agenda. This will include control design, evaluation and testing and oversight of ongoing monitoring of risks by creation of KRIs and KPIs as defined by CORE program Standards and Policy.
  • Perform continuous walkthroughs and process evaluations with Legal Process Owners
  • Identify and define risks and controls
  • Build, modify, monitor, write comprehensive test scripts, perform testing and substantiation of controls
  • Write Issues and corresponding Action Plans
  • Monitor, report on and perform post-closure validation of Issue and Action Plans
  • Perform pre-audit readiness process evaluations
  • Communicate effectively and confidently partner with senior members of the Legal department and work across global Corporate Functions (Audit, Finance, Technology, Operational Risk and Compliance) to support the strategic direction and goals of the firm surrounding improved risk identification and controls framework. 


  • 4 – 7 years of experience in Risk Management, Audit, Compliance, or related fields
  • Strong knowledge and background in Operational Risk framework including but not limited to performing walkthrough with Process Owners, process mapping, risk and controls identification, issue and action plan management, and applying Audit best practices
  • Knowledge of Risk & Control Self-Assessment methodology, issue and action plan management (control breaks and remediation) or other controls framework model
  • Knowledge of KPIs and KRIs metrics including defining thresholds, monitoring, analysis and reporting of metrics
  • Exceptional critical thinking, project management, analytical and ability to communicate confidently and clearly with all levels of the organization
  • Leadership demonstrated by solid subject matter expertise and ability to confidently influence, guide and make recommendations to stakeholders and senior management at all levels and cross-functionally
  • Strong organizational, communication and project management skills with demonstrated ability to lead and deliver on firm wide initiatives
  • Possess sense of urgency, intellectual curiosity, resourcefulness, flexibility in changing and competing priorities, problem solving skills with ability to synthesize large amounts of information and propose meaningful recommendations and provide guidance as required
  • Strong team player with high degree of professionalism and positive attitude
  • Advanced MS Office, including Visio or iGrafx, iManage or SharePoint
  • BA/BS required
  • Beneficial to have, but not required: Technology experience with application controls testing, controls automation design, knowledge of UAT, deployments, systems risk evaluations, understanding of software development lifecycle
