Dartmouth College, an Ivy League Institution located in Hanover, New Hampshire, seeks an enthusiastic, energetic, and responsible junior scientist to join the Department of Biochemistry as an entry-level Laboratory Technician, investigating the molecular basis of infectious prion diseases. We are especially looking to hire an individual who displays exceptional scientific curiosity, enjoys independent work, and seeks a long-term career as a Research Assistant. The successful candidate will be a careful and conscientious laboratory worker who possesses excellent determination, patience, and creativity.

This position requires outstanding math, logical problem solving, record keeping, and communications skills, both written and verbal, and the ability to collaborate effectively with a variety of constituents, including graduate students, the principal investigator, and other colleagues. The ideal candidate will utilize their creativity and problem-solving skills within a scientifically rigorous work environment that is constantly striving to make critical research advances.

The successful candidate will possess a Bachelor's degree in science, some laboratory experience, and the willingness to perform scientific protocols carefully.



Position Purpose

To participate as a team member in research investigations in the area of prion biology to develop cell culture, animal, and biochemical models of neurodegeneration. To set up and execute a variety of experiments by applying both established and novel methods, procedures and techniques.

This position is funded by a grant. Continuation is based upon available funds.

Key Accountabilities

Key Accountabilities

Research 85%
• Executes specified experiments precisely and carefully. Observes experiments and corrects disparate results. Notifies PI of problems associated with experiments and suggests solutions to procedures and techniques to meet research requirements.
• Keeps accurate and organized records.
• Performs experiments using appropriate P2 biohazard precautions and adheres to all laboratory safety requirements.
• Willing to work at least 3 years following training to complete ongoing project.

Communication - 5%
• Collects and analyzes data resulting from experimentation.
• Prepares appropriate and understandable representations of data such as graphs, tables and charts, etc.
• Contributes to the preparation of reports.

Operations Management - 5%
• Participates in the day-to-day care of the principal investigator's laboratory.
• Order laboratory supplies as needed.
• Instructs others in proper laboratory methods, procedures, and techniques.

Professional Development - 5%
• Willing to learn proper biohazard containment procedures and other experimental techniques from the principal investigator, research assistant, and other members of the laboratory.
• Reads relevant scientific literature

Performs other duties as assigned.
