Position Purpose

The research portfolio at the Thayer School exceeds $25M annually and continues to grow as the faculty expands. Nearly 60 faculty and other researchers submit in excess of 170 proposals annually and receive over 100 awards each year. This individual plays a key role in the Research Administration department, overseeing the financial management of a small portfolio of sponsored projects and providing support to the Department in a number of ways, including processing payroll and financial transactions on sponsored and non-sponsored research funds, ensuring compliance with college policies and federal regulations, and being responsible for the day-to-day support of all budgetary and financial accounting and monitoring issues (including research) to assigned client departments. As part of the Research Administration Team, supports pre- and post-award activities, under the supervision of the Director

Key Accountabilities

Research Administration: 45%
• Oversee the financial management of a small portfolio of sponsored projects, monitoring expenses for allowability, proper allocation, and consistency with PI and sponsor objectives; and determining appropriate expenditure levels to avoid cost overruns.
• Develop project budgets for assigned PIs and senior research scientists in preparing proposal submissions to external funding sources, while considering sponsor and College policies.
• Prepare and review monthly and quarterly reconciliations/analysis for assigned portfolios.
• Prepares reports and meet regularly with assigned faculty/PIs.
• Works to enhance and improve Research Administration processes and increase efficiencies.

Financial Processing and Reporting: Research Administration Support: 55%
• Review and approve all non-compensation expenses and monitor encumbrances to determine appropriateness, allowability and allocability.
• Prepares and submits payroll processing forms for research funded personnel.
• Maintains database for graduate student support, and performs data entry in financial reporting system.
• Produces reports on grant-related activities as needed for various audiences.
• Supports Research Administration team with administrative tasks related to compliance and generating grant documents.
• Updates budgets and projections for research accounts at the request of the Research Administration team.
• Updates and maintains research administration manual on training and processes.
