Position Purpose

Under the direction of the immediate supervisor, the Field Investigations Officer, in addition to regular Patrol Officer's duties and responsibilities, is responsible for conducting and leading initial field investigations as well as assigned follow up investigations as part of the Department functions for the safety of persons and the protection of college property.

Under the immediate direction of the Shift Supervisor, Field Investigations Officers are responsible for the protection of life & property at Dartmouth College and are tasked with supporting the Dartmouth College Mission by providing professional safety and security services to the college community of students, faculty, staff, visitors and college guests, and protecting college assets which include: physical & intellectual property, buildings, grounds, equipment and other items of value to the college. The Field Investigations Officer functions as a lead Patrol Officer tasked with initial field investigations for day to day reported incidents, and for assigned follow up investigations of complex cases.

Duties
• Will conduct field investigations during or immediately after an incident is reported.
• Perform initial and follow up interview of subjects and witnesses.
• Field investigations include, but are not limited to, photos and gathering of identifying information of people, items and areas; and, collection, tagging and logging of evidence in accordance with established chain of custody procedures.
• Will carry out follow up investigations as assigned by Shift Supervisor, Department Investigators Case Manager, and others.
• Must follow the Department Emergency Procedures in serious cases or cases of emergency.
• Must report to work on time and stay until properly relieved. Will not leave early unless previously approved by his/her supervisor.
• Must work well with other employees of the Security Department.
• Will keep all security related matters in confidence unless otherwise instructed by his/her supervisor or unless necessary to aid in an investigation or to gather information. This would include not discussing such information with students or any College employees without prior authorization or approval for the Director.
• Will inform the Director or the Dean on call, when requested by the Director, of all incidents involving police agencies which are not routine.
• Will attend Committee on Standard ( COS ) Hearings if requested, and when involved in cases brought before the COS for adjudication.
• Will assist in maintaining cruiser, including washing outside and cleaning inside. Seeing that the cruiser is properly operated during security shift.
• One of the most important aspects of the job in security on the College campus is attitude and approach in dealing with members of the College community. The Security employee will at all times strive to be polite and consistent in his/her dealings with people.

Patrol Duties:

• The Officer will answer Calls for Service from the College community, respond to them in the proper manner; and, when warranted, write and file complete yet concise Incident Report (IR) documenting actions taken is response to the Call for Service Report ( CSR ).
• The Officer will patrol grounds, buildings, parking lots, etc. during tour of duty checking for the theft and/or damage, suspicious activities/persons and/or anything out of the ordinary.
• The Officer must be willing to approach and attempt to identify persons when necessary. During this or any other contact with persons on campus, all attempts will be made to avoid physical contact. If this is not possible and physical confrontation occurs, the Director is to be notified as soon as possible and, in addition to an Incident Report, a Use of Force report must be filed.
• The Officer will carry out field and follow up investigations while on shift or as assigned.

Office Duties
• The Officer will answer the phone.
• The Officer will learn the proper use of the radio equipment and alarm systems and act as dispatcher, when requested.
• The Officer will be responsible for health transports and other transportation needs which are security responsibilities and occur on his/her security shift.
• The Officer will report to the Director any activities of Security personnel which would impair his/her ability to carry out his/her responsibilities as a security employee. This would include such activities as employee theft, misuse of keys, and misuse of authority.
• The Officer will see that all office procedures are followed on his/her security shift.
• The Officer will keep a Daily Activity Log to document all activities carried out on his/her shift; and write Incident Reports documenting issues brought up and the response to same.
• Unless specifically assigned to office or desk duty, the Security Officer will not spend extended lengths of time in the office. If two or more Officers are on duty and one is required to be in the office, the time in the office and the time out of the office will be split equally unless otherwise instructed by the Officer's supervisor.
• Officer will complete all necessary paperwork associated with CSRs, IRs, Daily Logs, Investigations including initial and supplemental reports, narratives documenting investigations and follow ups, and tagging and tracking paperwork related to collected evidence.
