Position Summary:

Responsible for directing and leading the activities and functional capabilities of the Medical Information and Communication Department within Medical Affairs of Acadia Pharmaceuticals Inc. This includes developing strategic direction, implementation, and oversight of the Medical Information Call Center; development of Medical Information response documents; medical congress support; publication planning and execution; and the development of Medical Affairs tools. Effective use of department personnel in not only ensuring timely completion of tasks, but also in allowing and promoting growth and experiences of the individual staff members.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Develop department strategic goals.
  • Manage staff and ensure they have the resources needed to complete tasks effectively and efficiently.
  • Collaborate with Sr. Management to ensure alignment of department strategic direction and goals with overall Corporate, Research & Development, Commercial and Medical Affairs goals.
  • Serves as a Medical Affairs content expert with focus on therapeutic area and product knowledge, and current published literature.
  • Responsible for the selection, contract negotiation with, and supervision of the work of vendors for various Medical Affairs activities including the Medical Information Call Center, medical advisory boards, medical tool development, publication planning and medical writing; ensuring work is high quality and developed on time and within budget.
  • Oversees and manages the Medical Information Call Center and associated Medical Information databases, including the analysis of metrics and generation of insightful reports on Medical Information requests.
  • Provides strategic oversight of the development of high quality medical and scientific collateral, including Standard and Custom Response Letters, Clinical Dossiers, Medical Affairs education slide sets and other Medical Affairs materials.
  • Assists with Medical Affairs advisory board strategy, planning, and execution.
  • Oversees the development, organization and maintenance of slide archive libraries.
  • Collaborates effectively with other functional groups across the organization as well as externally with thought leaders
  • Provides strategic direction into high quality/ high impact publication planning for products.
  • Contributes to the long term communications and lifecycle management plans.
  • Establishes requirements for the evolution of the Medical Communication and Information department.
  • Other responsibilities as assigned.

Education/Experience/Skills:

B.S. in life science or equivalent combination of relevant education and applicable job experience. An advanced degree in biological sciences (MD, PharmD, PhD) preferred.

Minimum 15 years progressively-responsible experience in the biopharmaceutical industry, including at least 7 years experience within Medical Information or Medical Communications functions; background in Neuroscience is a plus.

Must possess:

  • Scientific, clinical and therapeutic area knowledge.
  • Publication and manuscript preparation experience.
  • Experience in preparation of materials for use by Medical Affairs and experience in review/editing Medical Information materials; high skill level with relevant PC and software programs, including MS Office skills (Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint).
  • Demonstrated expertise in instructional design of presentation and training facilitation formats.
  • Skills as a poised and knowledgeable presenter of scientific information. This includes excellent writing capabilities and strong demonstrated presentation skills, including presentations within external formats such as physician gatherings, medical congresses, etc.
  • Ability to interact easily with all levels within the organization; tactful; mature; flexible.
  • Skilled at negotiating with business partners or management and influencing senior level leaders regarding matters of significance to the organization.
  • Proficient at creating and communicating a clear vision among team members effectively aligning resources and activities to achieve functional area and/or organizational goals.

Scope:

Establishes strategic plans for designated function(s) and may participate with others in management to align objectives across the organization. Works on complex issues where analysis of situations or data requires an in-depth knowledge of functional area(s) and related organizational objectives. Erroneous decisions will have a serious impact on the overall success of functional, or company operations.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, see, talk or hear in a standard office environment and independently from remote locations.
