At the County of Marin, our employees overwhelmingly report feeling their work is meaningful, they like the work they do, and they are proud to tell people “I work for the County of Marin.” Discover more about us, our values and our organizational culture here.

The Marin County Department of Public Works' mission is to provide the community with quality services, maintain and improve our public infrastructures and facilities, and support the preservation of Marin’s unsurpassed beauty.

The mission of the Disability Access Program is to ensure that all County programs, services, activities and facilities are accessible to and usable by all the people of Marin County as well as our visitors. The Disability Access Specialist I provides technical administrative support to the Disability Access Program to achieve program goals and provide excellent service to all 26 County departments, as well as the disability community. The primary focus of this position will be on architectural accessibility and the incumbent will work closely with staff in the Department of Public Works Engineering and Capital Projects Divisions. Assisting in performing facility surveys and creating accessibility reports of findings will be a major responsibility for this position.

The highly qualified candidate will have knowledge of State and Federal laws, rules and regulations pertaining to non-discrimination based on disability, and can interpret and apply laws based on their directives as well as intent. This individual understands that accessibility is civil rights, and functions from this philosophy in everyday execution of responsibilities. The Disability Access Program functions under a team dynamic, so the ability to collaborate is highly desirable. There will also be many opportunities to exercise independent decision making and demonstrate the ability to take initiative, so creative and self-governing thinkers are wanted. As this position has a primary focus on architectural accessibility, knowledge of the requirements and guidance put forth by the US Access Board and in the California Building Code are a must. Survey and inspection procedures, construction and engineering principles associated with disability accessibility and barrier abatement are desired bodies of knowledge. Finally, the successful candidate will either have possession of, or a plan to obtain certification as a Certified Access Specialist (CASp) via the CA Department of the State Architect.

We recognize your time is valuable, so please do not apply if you do not have at least the following required minimum qualifications: Equivalent to a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in business or public administration, planning, sociology, psychology, counseling or a related field and either one (1) year of full-time experience in a disability access program or other disability related program OR two (2) years of full-time experience performing varied and complex administrative/technical work. Additional experience in a disability access program or other disability related program may substitute for the education on a year-for-year basis.
