Job Summary: The Chatfield Community Supporting Agriculture program serves shareholders with a vegetable share every week that is either delivered to our downtown site or picked up on the farm. This position is responsible for the management of all vegetable crops grown for the CSA program. Position requires working knowledge of cultivation, irrigation, organic soil fertility management, crop planning and rotation, Integrated Pest Management practices, food safety practices, and other aspects of sustainable crop production. This position serves as the day to day crew leader for the CSA staff and volunteers. Additional responsibilities include assistance with general operational tasks for Denver Botanic Gardens at Chatfield.

Education/Experience: Bachelor's degree (B. A.) in agriculture, agronomy, horticulture, botany, or related field from four-year college or university; or minimum four years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Knowledge and experience in sustainable production of fruit and vegetable crops. Minimum 3-4 years of organic/sustainable farming experience with working knowledge in all aspects of crop care and maintenance. Experience in the care and cultivation of a wide variety of specialty crops and vegetables, with demonstrated knowledge and hands-on skills in the same including but not limited to Integrated Pest Management (IPM), weed, disease, and insect recognition, irrigation, and soil cultivation/fertility management. Experience growing for a Community Supported Agriculture program and experience interacting with subscribers is preferred. Two years experience with the safe operation and repair of facilities/maintenance and variety of farm equipment is highly desirable. Staff and volunteer management experience is required. Familiar with IBM compatible equipment, Microsoft Word and Excel, e-mail, and standard office equipment. Strong verbal, interpersonal, and written communications skills required. Must have valid Colorado drivers license and an acceptable driving record. Position often requires overtime hours during the summer months. Must be able and willing to work weekends, early morning or evenings periodically.

Essential Job Duties:

  • Oversees all CSA vegetable production including but not limited to: planting, weeding, cultivating, fertilizing, watering, harvesting, mowing, and general maintenance of CSA fields.
  • Develops and maintains an annual crop plan for production.
  • Maintains CSA seasonal staff schedules, making sure there is staff coverage daily.
  • Attends regular meetings with the Farm Program Manager to ensure effective panning and departmental communication.
  • Applies appropriate organic agronomic techniques for growing, cultivating, fertilizing, thinning, soil cultivation and conditioning for plants ensuring overall outstanding display and maximum productivity of crops.
  • Directs and oversees the work of others who assist with the maintenance of the vegetable crops including staff members, interns, and volunteers.
  • Works with the Farm Program Manager to manage expense budget, ordering of equipment, materials and tools needed for each season and throughout the season.
  • Manages the weekly CSA distributions generally from May through October.
  • Maintains irrigation system, make repairs, and installation of new system as needed.
  • Develops annual propagation request, seed orders, and harvest records.
  • Executes all pre-season bed prep, transplanting and end of season tasks from mowing with the tractor to compost applications and soil testing.

Other Job Duties:

  • Manages wholesale accounts and communicates with customers.
  • Assists with indoor propagation of crops.
  • Practices integrated pest management when dealing with plant disease and insect problems.
  • Maintains annual harvest and input records related to the CSA throughout the growing season.
  • Is friendly and available to CSA members, volunteers, and staff to answer questions and encourage interaction with the CSA farm.
  • Collaborates closely with Chatfield staff, volunteers, curators, and other staff in ensuring all responsible areas are maintained appropriately.
  • Assists Operations staff with vehicle, equipment, and building maintenance.
  • Researches best organic farming practices and ensures that the CSA practices the highest organic standards
  • Participates in education programs including on and off-site classes, writing articles, website articles, leading tours, etc.
  • Serves as a resource to others seeking information on specialty area.
  • Provides courteous, accurate responses to inquiries from management, co-workers, volunteers, members, and visitors both face-to-face and via telephone.
  • Works with all departments to assure highest quality experience for all Denver Botanic Gardens visitors.
  • Maintains a positive, helpful, and solution-oriented demeanor when responding to or serving members and visitors.
  • Assists with general horticultural tasks for Denver Botanic Gardens at Chatfield.
  • Maintains satisfactory working relationships with managers, co-workers, and others.
