About The Job

The communications coordinator for American Airlines plays a critical role in ensuring company news, announcements and events are reported accurately for internal and external audiences. Staffing media interviews and events, participating in emergency response efforts and drills, and drafting and assisting with the development of internal and external communications also are key components of this position. To be successful, this individual must be able to perform these responsibilities in a high-pressure environment with tight deadlines. They must be comfortable working closely with both company leadership and frontline employees in a wide variety of positions working in locations throughout the company’s global network to gather information and craft statements and other materials for internal and external distribution. This person must be adept at information sharing with other team members and possess the ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously. A successful candidate will be interested in and able to develop a thorough understanding of American’s commercial practices and the important role communications plays in driving the business. This will position the individual for future opportunities in Corporate Communications or other areas of the airline.

Specifically, you’ll do the following:

  • Pitch stories that positively position American’s corporate and commercial interests
  • Draft press releases and statements to share with media and external audiences
  • Draft stories and other materials for internal company newsletter and employee intranet site
  • Staff and assist with the planning of media interviews and events
  • Work with journalists and other members of the media to facilitate the development of their stories to positively influence coverage
  • Collaborate with Commercial and Corporate communications teams and related departments throughout the company to gather information for news, announcements and events
  • Assist with strategic communications projects, as needed

Required Qualifications

  • A minimum of one to two years of communications experience
  • The proven ability to work in a collaborative team environment with tight deadlines both during normal business operations and after hours as warranted
  • Developing an in-depth understanding of American’s operations and business practices and the broader airline industry
  • Ability to make independent judgments and decisions while taking ownership of job responsibilities
  • Excellent written and oral communications skills
  • A high level of proficiency with Microsoft Office including Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook
  • A strong understanding of AP style
  • Flexibility to work an irregular schedule as needed
  • Must be willing to travel up to 25 percent
  • Must exercise sound business judgment and handle confidential information with sensitivity

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working as a reporter or journalist or in corporate communications or media relations for a large, multi-national organization is a plus
