Position Purpose

To serve as a deputy in Advancement Communications assisting the AVP in areas crucial to the department's success such as strategic thinking, long-range planning, inter-office relations, budgeting, writing, editing, and leading a team of staffers in specified projects. Works collaboratively to plan for the development and execution of creative content that can be effectively targeted to defined audiences through multiple channels to achieve goals and initiatives of the Alumni Relations and Development programs. Collaborates with colleagues throughout the Advancement Division to realize high impact volunteer support, deep alumni engagement, and the full philanthropic potential of our constituencies. Plays a significant role in implementing an integrated, market-oriented communications program.

Key Accountabilities

  • In close consultation with the AVP of Marketing and Engagement and select officers of the college, helps create and implement a comprehensive communications plan that will enable colleagues in development and alumni relations to reach their business goals, especially for an ambitious fund-raising campaign. Develops content strategies that address Dartmouth brand positioning, donor recognition, marketing, target audience, competitive issues, innovation and creative imperatives, etc. Works closely with frontline fund-raisers to ensure communications materials meet their needs. Ensures department's quick response to requests for assistance. Brings a creative vision and ideation as well as thorough follow-through on development, execution, and measurement of marketing content and design. Helps ensure that communications to alumni and other external constituencies reflect the mission, values and strategic objectives of the administration. Brings a creative, critical, and analytical approach to planning sessions with colleagues. Seeks out and maintains productive working relationships, when appropriate, with key faculty members, college administrators, donors, and communications colleagues across campus to develop sources for stories, build consensus, and keep abreast of College and alumni affairs. Contributes to creating a flexible department structure that can anticipate and respond to shifts in priorities. Remains current on trends and innovations in Development and Alumni Relations, as well as the communications strategies and best-practices services offered by other non-profits. Represents the communications department at meetings and events as needed. Assists the AVP of Marketing and Engagement in budget planning and resource allocation issues. 80%
  • Leads a team of writers (and collaborates with both in-house and freelance designers and web producers) in a wide range of communications projects, from brochures to working papers, invitations to advertisements, and newsletters to email. Writes and edits text for printed and online publications. Leads by example with regard to appropriate risk-taking, cross-organizational cooperation, and clear standards of conduct. In collaboration with the AVP of Marketing and Engagement, hires, coaches, supports, trains, and evaluates staff to meet changing department needs and opportunities. 20%
