Position Purpose

The Cognitive and Affective Neuroscience Lab (CANlab), directed by Professor Tor Wager, studies the effects of expectations, social and interpersonal context, self-regulation, and learning on the human brain and physiology. We study brain responses related to pain, emotion, social rejection, empathy, and craving. We are looking for a motivated, high-performing individual to join our team as a research assistant in the Lab's mobile research unit. This individual will go out into the community to collect brain and biological samples for research projects involving functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI), combined electroencephalography-fMRI, brain health and inflammation, and more. The Community Outreach and Health Research Assistant will be in charge of driving the Lab's mobile research unit to meet participants in various local community settings. Responsibilities will include driving the research van, visiting local clinics and patient locations, and testing participants from community samples.

Key Accountabilities

Key Accountabilities

Research Coordination

  • Identifies participants potentially eligible for research opportunities; drives research van to meet participants in the community; tracks participant informed consent process and registers participants to appropriate study.
  • Collects brain and biological measures (e.g. blood draws/blood spots), conducts neuropsychological tests, collects electroencephalography ( EEG )/functional near infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) data or data collected using similar methods
  • Conducts functional MRI tasks during scanning.
  • Works with research team to ensure compliance with all protocol requirements regarding participant testing and follow-up.
  • Obtains clarification of protocol ambiguities; coordinates with principal investigator as necessary.
  • Manages computerized data regarding mobile research participants.
  • Creates and manages detailed study calendars for participants in multiple research projects and ensures completion of all required tests and procedures.
  • Tabulates and formats data for reports and grant applications; prepares statistical reports. Prepares detailed reports of participant safety information.
  • Serves in a pivotal role in ensuring compliance with state and federal regulations regarding participant safety and confidentiality.

Communication

  • Consults with research team and health professionals regarding complex issues in the conduct of biological testing and participant safety.
  • Informs principal investigator and research team of any issues with community participants, mobile research unit maintenance, and data collection issues.
  • Communicates with local community health agencies and clinics to recruit participants.
  • Communicates and schedules directly with participants from sometimes at-risk populations.
  • Represents the Lab in the community by conducting outreach initiatives and research in public spaces.
