CCB Risk

Chase Consumer & Community Banking (CCB) serves consumers and small businesses with a broad range of financial services, including personal banking, small business banking and lending, mortgages, credit cards, payments, auto finance and investment advice. Consumer & Community Banking Risk Management partners with each CCB sub-line of business to identify, assess, prioritize and remediate risk. Types of risk that occur in consumer businesses include fraud, reputation, operational, credit, market and regulatory, among others


As part of the CCB Home Lending Risk Management team, as an Economist on the Emerging Risk team you will be responsible for contributing on economic surveillance, geographic risk assessments and emerging risk detection.  This is a global team with employees based in the US and India.  The team reports into the Head of Strategic Analytics for Home Lending Risk, and is accountable to the Chief Risk Officer for Chase Home Lending.



This role requires the candidate to establish and maintain an economic monitoring framework capable of identifying economic triggers than are predictive of both changes in mortgage defaults and home prices.  The framework is maintained at the Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) level, although county and city level research may be required to properly assess the various regions across the US.


In addition to establishing and maintaining the monitoring framework, the candidate will also lead monthly deep dives into specific MSAs, evaluating regional political, economic, and portfolio data (i.e. unemployment, home sales and days on market trends, industry and Chase specific delinquency metrics, migration patterns, shift in industry concentration, local government action and changes to local and state taxes, among many others), to risk-assess the various regions and help direct lending policy actions when deemed necessary.


The candidate will also be expected to conduct emerging risk research.  This includes surfacing emerging risk topics based on monitoring housing and macroeconomic data trends, firm and industry earnings calls, media reports, and the political arena.  The candidate must be able to assess the content/conclusions raised, summarizing supporting and contrarian views in an effort properly direct policy actions when deemed necessary.  This research will need to quantify the firm’s exposure to these potential issues and provide recommendations on courses of action.


Across these three major responsibilities the candidate will need to be able to extract, manipulate and analyze portfolio performance data from multiple internal databases, match and compare with data from external sources, to understand portfolio behavior in the light of external events/ trends.  Finally, the candidate will be expected to present research on behalf of team to CRO level audiences, and represent group at broader forums and risk committees.

  • Doctorate in Economics or related field is desirable, expert economics knowledge and background is required

  • 7+ years of professional experience in the financial industry or data manipulation/analysis/reporting

    • Knowledge of the residential real estate market in the United States is a plus

    • Prior experience in the mortgage business is a plus, while experience in the lending space would be desirable

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, ability to summarize wide-ranging research into a crisp and concise takeaway for a senior audience

  • 5+ years of SAS or SQL hands-on experience in coding and analysis

  • Strong analytical and quantitative skills, critical thinking, investigative problem-solving and decision making

  • Knowledge of and prior experience with statistical tools to establish frameworks, and/or simple models  

  • Strong organizational skills to proactively manage her or his own book of work

  • Effective time management skills to handle competing priorities appropriately and meet tight deadlines

  • Capable of working both independently and as a contributing team member, to meet team and department goals with a strict timeline

  • People management experience is a plus
  • Advanced knowledge of MS Office required (Excel, PowerPoint, Word, Outlook)
