Location and Hours: Charlotte, NC or East Region (open to Remote work)

This position will require some travel/overnight stay to other work or office locations. (Currently on hold for travel due to COVID, however this may resume at a future date. This position is currently 100% remote due to COVID, however this may change to a designated office position with expected travel at a future date.

General Summary:

The Payroll Underwriter II is responsible for underwriting business within designated authority level following guidelines to ensure profitable production and retention of assigned book of business.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Perform disciplined underwriting and pricing practices of new and renewal business, in accordance with company guidelines and standards.
  • Secures, evaluates, and interprets required information, to select, classify and rate risks appropriately, to ensure profitability.
  • Works independently to meet required deadlines and task dates and is able to apply subjective judgment and select appropriate course of action. Manages most complex cases.
  • Manages large volume of submissions, renewals, maintenance transactions, phone calls and e-mails, according to Service Level Agreements (SLA's).
  • Works closely with agency partners, developing and maintaining relationships.
  • Manages difficult or emotional customer situations and responds promptly to customer needs.
  • Solicits customer feedback to improve service and responds to requests for service and assistance
  • May be required to work outside of core business hours depending on business needs.

Job Requirements:
  • Payroll Product Experience desired.
  • Bachelor's Degree from a college or university, or minimum of five years of related Underwriting experience and/or training, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • 2-3 years of experience in workers compensation desired.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of the organization.
  • Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportion, percentages, area, circumference and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
  • To perform this job successfully, an individual requires above average skills using personal computers including data entry, word processing and spreadsheet programs, and knowledge of Internet software; Microsoft products including Excel, Word, and Outlook.
  • Working knowledge of business office practices and procedures, English grammar, spelling and business math.

Work Environment/Physical Demands:

This is an office job that currently operates remote but similar to an office environment; this role will routinely use office equipment such as computers, phones, printers, and web conferencing technology as examples.
  • This is largely a sedentary role; however, some mobility is required
  • May work early, late, or occasional weekend hours to accommodate business needs
  • Occasional lifting of a maximum of 30lbs.
  • Minimal travel to other office locations/meeting locations occasionally necessary
