UW Information Technology (UW-IT) is the central information technology organization for the University of Washington, responsible for strategic planning, oversight, and direction of the UWs IT infrastructure, resources, and services. UW-IT provides critical technology support to all three campuses, UW medical centers, and research operations around the world. UW-IT partners with the University community to enable innovation, learning, discovery, and service by providing critical technology support to all three campuses, UW medical centers, and research operations around the world. Academic Services within UW-IT, develops and provides technologies, learning spaces, classroom support and services that enhance teaching, learning and research at the UW. This division works with UW faculty and departments to use technology to improve learning outcomes and to advance the Universitys academic mission. It collaborates with other UW units and external partners to share and integrate resources and services with a focus on creating efficiencies.

The Student Program, a unit within UW-ITs Academic Services division, develops and maintains systems that support key processes in the student lifecycle - admissions, academic planning, registration, financial aid, and student accounts. We are seeking a Technology Manager to lead a team of senior engineers that develop and support the core Student Information System.

The Technology Manager will:

  • Manage technical staff who support and develop enterprise student systems in both hybrid- and remote-work settings
  • Partner with UWs tri-campus stakeholders to promote student success through wise technology investment and operations
  • Cultivate a culture of operational excellence by leading efforts to mature operations through process improvement, capacity management, and demand shaping
  • Own the strategy and execution for a set of the services provided by the Student Program
  • Lead, in partnership with others, key initiatives in the Student Program and UW-IT Academic Services

    REQUIREMENTS
  • Bachelors Degree in Business Administration, Systems Analysis, Information Systems Design, Liberal Arts or Sciences, or similar degree or experience.
  • Four or more years of demonstrated effectiveness in a supervisory role.
  • Understanding of software development processes in a large and complex environment spanning diverse technologies with multiple stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated ability to coordinate and lead others in the completion of a complex goal leveraging established project management methodologies.
  • Demonstrated success building strong relationships with partners, particularly by helping them translate their needs into clear business requirements, ensuring that theyre aware of work status, and serving as a trusted point of contact for Student Program.
  • Experience with one or more aspects of IT Operations including service management, system and service lifecycle management, and security planning.
  • Demonstrated excellent communication skills, technical documentation skills, user liaison skills, and personal interaction abilities.
  • Self-starter, able to manage multiple priorities and tasks in a dynamic environment.
  • Ability to deal with trade-offs, conflict, and change management in a collaborative and positive way.

    DESIRED
  • Experience in a major higher education institution.
  • Familiarity with systems and processes related to students.
  • Working knowledge or experience with service management methodologies/concepts; experience managing a software-based service and understanding of the ITIL framework.
  • Demonstrated experience managing the operational aspects of business-critical information systems.
  • Ability to develop and present information or proposals that support decision making among a diverse set of stakeholders and business partners.
  • Demonstrated ability to use data to make decisions.

    CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
    This position contributes to a collaborative team work environment. Collaboration is supported through group working sessions focused on problem-solving, shared-space working environments, and a variety of communication tools that connect in-office and remote workers.

    While the general working hours are within Monday through Friday, 8 am - 5 pm, this position has a great deal of scheduling and location flexibility to help the incumbent manage non-work commitments. The incumbent at times must be willing to adjust hours to accommodate the needs of colleagues and partners. Events that will occur outside the normal work schedule include, but are not limited to, impromptu staff meetings, client consultations, and system modifications. This position has regular stringent deadlines revolving around the academic calendar that may sometimes require extended work hours.
