We Are:

Fermilab is America's premier laboratory for particle physics and accelerator research, funded by the U.S. Department of Energy. We support discovery science experiments in Illinois and South Dakota and at locations around the world, including Canada, mountaintops in Arizona and Chile, and the South Pole.

The Accelerator Division/Target Systems Department is seeking a Technician-II to join the Fermilab team. Under the supervision of a senior technical team member and based on journeymen-level experience and/or academic study, the successful candidate will provide technical support to the Target Systems Dept. Operations Group. This technician will be expected to learn all operational procedures and be able to meet all medical requirements to access and respond to all maintenance and operational emergencies to insure continued operation of the experiments. Persons seeking this position must be willing respond to operational emergencies on a 24hr. 7 days per week bases. The ability to work as a member of a team is essential.

You Will
  • Fabricate, assemble, install and remove a variety of mechanical parts, sub-assemblies, support assemblies, and beamline components in the Fermilab target stations, based on drawings, diagrams, and sketches as instructed. Assists in construction and assembly of support equipment. Prepare and tests equipment for operation.
  • Contribute within a diverse team of physicists, engineers, designers and technicians to design, fabricate and address operational activities of target facilities integral to high-energy physics experiments.
  • Conduct periodic safety inspections of area of assignment. Assists with the identification, packaging, control, and disposal of radioactive waste.
  • Procure and maintain inventories of small parts, supplies, materials, and equipment.
  • Assist in the implementation of the design of equipment and systems. Drives quality in all job aspects.

We Are Looking For
  • HS Diploma and 4-10 years of relevant experience or additional training.
  • Ability to trouble-shoot mechanical systems in a hands-on systematic fashion using sound engineering principles.
  • Must be capable in the use of common hand tool and precision measuring equipment, (a working knowledge of machine tools would be highly desirable). Will be expected to assemble components within a +/- .005 tolerance.
  • Must be proficient in general assembly using mechanical drawings, sketches, and verbal instructions.
  • Experience in the preparation of materials to achieve quality aluminum and stainless-steel welds.
  • Ability to work effectively under the requirements of schedules and shifting priorities. Ability to work independently following general or detailed verbal or written instructions. Ability to work mandatory overtime and perform shift work as needed is required.
  • Must be proficient in working in a Windows PC environment, and with MS Word and Excel applications. Must have good oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills. Must have demonstrated ability to work in team environment. Desirable to have more extensive computing experience with design and analysis tools, as well as presentation tools.
  • Experience in electrical wiring and electrical safety.
  • The ability to read electrical schematics would de highly desirable.
  • Experience in the preparation of materials to achieve quality aluminum and stainless-steel welds.

  • Ability to work in confined spaces is required.
  • Occasionally work outdoors.
  • Occasionally work in hot environments.
  • Ability to legally operate cars and light trucks is required.

Physical Factors: High Voltage and Oxygen Deficiency Hazard
  • Ability to meet tunnel entry, underground, and radiation worker requirements are required.
  • Ability to work with epoxies, solvents, glues, and other chemicals is required.
