SUMMARY OF DUTIES:
The Sr Director Strategic Initiatives will serve as the central leader for strategic enterprise business initiatives and organizational goals that are common across the organization. This leader must successfully build collaborative relationships with colleagues at all levels of the organization and manage through influence to deliver solutions for Amtraks long and short-range business objectives.
This position requires a hands-on, self-motivated, smart, and emotionally intelligent individual who thrives in a highly dynamic environment and relishes the challenges and opportunities in the Transportation industry.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Business Strategy and Planning
Lead development and maintenance of enterprise long-term strategic plan, creating frameworks to help structure the teams thinking, drive visibility, and facilitate alignment.
Deliver the 5-year strategic plan in collaboration with the executive leadership team, financial planning and analysis team, and various other teams to continue to drive ongoing strategic alignment between the long-term strategy and the shorter-term Annual Operating Plan (AOP) process.
Coordinate identification of strategic focus areas for AOP as well as supporting key initiatives organized within the six Pillars (Safety & Operations, People, Customer Impact, Financial Stewardship, Assets, Strategy)
Articulate and manage KPIs using metrics to drive performance and provide data in support of key decisions.
Track effectiveness of strategies in action to continually assess performance against goals, including reporting on progress on key initiatives.
Portfolio Management of Common Tools
Partnering with teams across the organization, drive strategic projects in support of Amtraks Fast Forward initiative to efficiently ramp up network expansion and infrastructure development projects; for example:
o Drive execution of projects to deliver or enhance a set of tools that are common to Fast Forward initiatives:
Create a Portfolio Approach to execute Common Tool projects
Drive execution and coordination between projects
Coordinate overall Fast Forward Initiative with leader of Landing Team, which is spearheading network expansion implementation
Develop next steps beyond Landing Team and Common Tools for Fast Forward
Identify dependencies and leverage multiple sources of information simultaneously
Ensure realistic estimates of scope, resource requirements and schedule needed to accomplish team objectives
Balance urgent and effective action, commitment to excellence, and taking initiative to resolve problems; hold internal stakeholders accountable where appropriate
Other areas of focus to include:
Coordinate, support and provide guidance on initiatives to cross-functional stakeholders. Incremental areas of focus:
o Coordinate Grant-related FRA Strategic Framework efforts
o Drive MER estimate vs. actual project strategy/roadmap
o Support Commercial and Strategy teams for special projects
o Portfolio leader for Innovation Council

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelor's degree or equivalent practical experience.
15 years business experience with at least 5 years of experience in a client-facing role or communicating, aligning, and managing internal stakeholders across multiple levels, including executive leadership within business strategy and operations, management consulting, sales operations or revenue growth.
Strategic Agility: Sees ahead clearly and can anticipate future consequences and trends accurately; can articulately paint credible pictures and visions of possibilities and likelihoods
Financial Business Acumen: Knowledge and understanding of financial touch points and strong financial business acumen.
Results Orientation: Delivers beyond expectations and sets new and stretching goals for him/herself and the team. S/he will have a deep understanding of operational and process improvements that impact quality and execution and deliver continuous improvement

Process Management: Can identify and articulate the processes necessary to get things down efficiently and effectively; Planning & Priority Setting: Demonstrate an ability to set objectives and goals and organize work appropriately to meet and exceed goals, possess strong organizational and time management skills
Problem Solving & Decision Quality: Able to use rigorous logic and methods to solve problems with effective solutions; Risk Management: Ability to think ahead and catch problems before they arise
Organizational Savvy: Able to build constructive and effective relationships and use them to maneuver through complex situations
Influencing & Negotiation: Can present ideas and directions that lead others to action, demonstrates strong listening, written and oral communication skills

COMMUNICATIONS AND INTERPERSONAL SKILLS:
Must have excellent oral and written communication skills.

If an applicant/employee refuses to provide written consent for Amtrak to obtain these records, the individual will not be permitted to perform safety-sensitive functions.
