The Amgen Biologics Optimization group is seeking a highly motivated Senior Associate Scientist to join the Protein Chemistry group at our state-of-the-art research facility in Thousand Oaks, CA. The Biologics Optimization group is responsible for the optimization, production, assessment, and selection of large molecule therapeutic drug candidates, many of which are complex biologics.

The Protein Chemistry group is primarily responsible for the purification and analytical assessment of novel and complex scaffold molecules, often antibody-based, that will be the next generation of large molecules therapeutics. The Sr. Associate Scientist will be a part of a multidisciplinary team with capabilities in protein engineering, purification and characterization of large molecule drug candidates with a heavy focus on purification and characterization.

The successful candidate will apply their scientific expertise to assist in the identification and optimization of promising therapeutic candidates to treat serious illnesses and advance Amgen's mission to serve patients.

Key Responsibilities include:
  • Apply protein biochemistry expertise to purify and analyze therapeutic drug candidates.
  • Drive innovation through the development of novel processes that increase capabilities, speed, throughput and/or quality.
  • Generate scientific data to support generation of publications, patents, or regulatory submissions; participate in internal and external scientific outreach.


Basic Qualifications

Master's degree and 3 years of scientific experience

OR

Bachelor's degree and 5 years of experience

Preferred Qualifications
  • Doctorate degree
  • Experience with protein purification, preferably with complex, engineered large molecules
  • Proficiency with a variety of chromatography techniques (Affinity, IEX, HIC, RP, MMC), liquid chromatography instrumentation (FPLC, HPLC) and software (Unicorn, ChromLab)
  • Familiarity with protein analytical techniques (HPLC, MCE, etc) and analysis software (Chromeleon, LabChip)
  • Knowledge of high throughput purification and analytical techniques is a plus
  • Ability to multi-task, work flexibly and efficiently in a cross-functional environment
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills; demonstrated ability to analyze and interpret scientific results
