Job Description:

Amherst College invites applications for the Special Services Generalist/Custodian position. The Special Services Generalist/Custodian is a full-time, year-round position, job group and level AO-2. The Special Services Generalist / Custodian supports the efforts of both the Custodial Shop and Special Services ans supports a diverse campus community. This position performs general custodial duties, participates in office moves, general trucking duties, set up for special events, and provides general trucking both on-campus and off-campus. This position is the secondary contact person responsible for obtaining detailed information regarding special events and office moves from a diverse set of customers. The person in this position is also responsible for assisting the Seymour Warehouse stock keeper with central receiving of deliveries to the campus, filling supply orders, and repairing custodial equipment.

Work schedule: The position is designated as providing essential services and may be required to report to work, or remain on duty even when the College is closed. In the event of inclement weather or an emergency, support occurs in either providing materials (snow blowers, wet vacuums) or with participating in tasks.

Our work is central to student life and their needs occur at a variety of times throughout the day, week, and year and as such, a flexible schedule with extended shift times may be required. This person must be able to work weekends or extended hours to support special events or last-minute requests. The work schedule may vary and corresponds to the College's operational needs, but generally is Monday through Friday, 6 am-2:30 pm.

Summary of Duties and Responsibilities
Special Services
  • Special Event set-ups and office moves and performs general maintenance and custodial duties as needed. Effectively interacts with a diverse set of customers to obtain more detailed information. Receives and manages work orders utilizing technology (tablet) to communicate with customers through facilities work order system. Maintaining storage spaces, and monitoring equipment. Maintaining an accurate inventory of chairs, tables, hand-trucks, dollies, and specialized tools.
  • Perform safe operation of college vehicles and ensure they are kept in good working order. General trucking duties include but, not limited to, transporting furniture, appliances, custodial supplies, books, and mailings. Daily inspect the vehicle, report repairs immediately to the Supervisor and Service Center to enable the work to be scheduled. For any safety-related items, the driver is to not operate the vehicle.
  • Assisting the Furnish & Supplies Storekeeper in the operation of Seymour warehouse - Participates in helping with central receiving of items to the campus. Restocking custodial supplies and repairing equipment. Filling weekly custodial supply orders.

  • Perform general custodial work required to maintain safe, clean, orderly, and sanitary conditions in buildings and their adjacent grounds in accordance with established work routines, cleaning methods and procedures. Conduct room inventories using a tablet. Effectively collaborate with a diverse set of colleagues, ensuring a respectful, inclusive climate.
  • Projects- Strip, screen, and refinish floors, extract carpets, wash walls, ceilings and glass, snow removal, support the campus-wide recycling program, as well as complete monthly work request forms, building inspections, and student damage reports.

Qualifications
Required:
  • Valid Driver's License and successful credentialing is required in order to operate college vehicles
  • General knowledge of equipment maintenance and repair
  • Basic knowledge in operating hand tools necessary for assembling and moving items
  • Basic familiarity with computer usage, including email and internet
  • Strong customer service, organizational and time-management skills including the ability to plan, organize and multi-task when priorities change frequently
  • Demonstrated verbal and written communications skills including the ability to follow written and verbal instructions
  • Commitment to contributing to an intentionally inclusive and respectful climate
  • An acceptable criminal offender records information (CORI) check
  • Successful completion of pre-employment physical and lift test

Preferred:
  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • 1 year of related vehicle operation and equipment use
