The Senior Principal Engineer, IT Operations Technology, will be responsible for cultivating the engineering culture in the Operations Technology organization. They will ensure the organization develops high-quality software following the best engineering practices from security by design, DevOps, automated deployment pipelines, code quality automation, test automation, etc.

They will work closely with the various product development teams in the organization to coach and develop plans to improve over time and will be responsible for the technical evaluation of new hires and technical promotions. They will be highly technical and lead by example; writing code, participating in pair programming, and helping teams implement recommended changes.

What you'll do

  • Work with PTLs and Security Ninjas to prioritize work on security vulnerabilities
  • Continuously review Operations Technology’s engineering practices and advise teams on prioritizing improvements
  • Ensure all teams have fully automated deployment pipelines, including infrastructure and configuration as code
  • Encourage usage of standard code repositories
  • Help teams implement linters, automate code quality checks and share best practices from other teams
  • Help team refine test automation strategy and help with implementation
  • Mentor team members on sound software engineering practice across all levels of technical expertise
  • Develop a consistent way to evaluate software engineers' experience for hiring and promotions
  • Promote sharing, transparency and openness
  • Organize software engineering guilds within the organization
  • Bring to the attention of leaders roadblocks that impede the software engineers
  • Be aware of, and influence, the overall American Airlines engineering culture
  • Be an expert in software design patterns
  • Promote engagement with excellent engineering practices in a fun and creative ways

All you'll need for success

  • Minimum Qualifications- Education & Prior Job Experience
    • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Technology, Information Systems (CIS/MIS), Engineering or related technical discipline, or equivalent experience/training
    • Highly respected software engineer with 10 years of expertise in Java/JEE development
    • 5 years of Cloud development(infrastructure automation and application engineering)
  • Preferred Qualifications- Education & Prior Job Experience
    • Advanced Degree
    • Data lake engineering and Machine learning experience
    • Experience in other languages especially C#
  • Skills, Licenses & Certifications
    • Ability to influence through outstanding interpersonal skills, collaboration, and negotiation skills
    • Good listening skills, and the ability to lead with humility
