Job Summary

AECOM is actively seeking a highly talented Senior Marine Archaeologist who can be based in our Germantown, MD, Houston, TX, Tampa, FL, or Rocky Hill, CT office. The Senior Marine Archaeologist will provide support to cultural resource projects throughout the United States and potentially international work, as available. The Senior Marine Archaeologist will have extensive knowledge of field data collection techniques, implement marine archaeological monitoring, inventory, evaluation, and data recovery efforts, analyze marine remote sensing data and maritime archaeological data, and prepare compliance reports.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Assist in the scoping of archaeological projects and utilize GIS, site records, and other data sources to identify locations where sites can occur.

  • Keep records and maintain the relevant State Historic Preservation Officer (SHPO) documentation pertaining to cultural resources.

  • Provides regulatory compliance support for Federal, state, municipal, and commercial clients.

  • Serves as a Principal Investigator and have experience preparing Work Plans, designing research and field methodologies, directing field crews including scheduling work, making individual or teamwork assignments, and leading the instruction of others in the use of equipment, technology, and field methods, performing and overseeing data interpretation, overseeing report production, and making determinations of eligibility and client recommendations.

  • Supports all phases of archaeological investigation and regulatory compliance.

  • Collects information and makes judgments through observation, interviews, and the review of documents.

  • Writes archaeological reports and/or prepare archaeological site forms and in making decisions about project alternatives, NRHP evaluations, and assessing effects on historic properties.

  • Works with technical field, lab and office staff, managers and administrative staff to ensure that projects meet AECOM quality standards

  • Performs manual labor including diving.

  • Has ability to perform bending, kneeling, standing, and lifting and carrying objects weighing 50 lbs. and have a tolerance for working in outdoor environments, including prolonged walking or standing on various terrain or marine vessels in a wide range of weather conditions.

Minimum Requirements

  • BA/BS in Maritime Archaeology with a focus on marine paleo-environment and sedimentary processes + 6 years of relevant experience or demonstrated equivalency of experience and/or education.

  • Meets the Secretary of the Interior Professional Qualification Standards for Archeology.

Preferred Qualifications

  • MA/MS or PhD in Maritime Archaeology with a focus on marine paleo-environment and sedimentary processes

  • 5+ years of experience

  • Experience with geophysical survey methodologies to include:

  • Understanding and operational knowledge of sub-bottom-profiler (SBP) systems

  • Interpretations of SBP data in a marine/fluvial environment

  • Understanding and operational knowledge of ultra-high resolution seismic (UHRS) systems

  • Interpretations of UHRS data in a marine/fluvial environment

  • Side scan sonar data collection and interpretations

  • Marine magnetometer data collection and interpretations

  • Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR)

  • Interpretations of GPR data in fluvial and urban environments

  • An understanding of field-testing experience to include a combination of methods such as:

  • Box coring

  • Vibracoring

  • Underwater push coring

  • Underwater hand augering

  • Core analysis

  • Geotechnical log interpretation

  • Working knowledge of isotopic dating

  • Ability to conduct paleolandform reconstructions

  • Clear and concise writing skills

  • Knowledge of and demonstrated experience with State and Federal CRM legal framework

  • BOEM guidelines and regulations

  • NEPA Substitution process

  • SHPO Consultation

  • THPO Consultation

  • Ability to travel for periods potentially extending 30 days or more

  • Must have or be able to:

  • Carry AAUS diving certification to 100 ft

  • Have Rescue Diver or higher national certification

  • Pass basic SOLAS offshore safety requirements

  • Carry a minimum of 50 lbs.

  • Walk/hike over rough terrain

  • Work in cold or hot environments for extended periods

  • Travel for periods potentially extending 30 days or more

Preferred Skills/Experience:

  • Demonstrated understanding of marine paleo-environment reconstruction and sedimentary processes

  • Demonstrated use of Hypack software and associated data analysis modules

  • Demonstrated use of Sonar Wiz software and associated data analysis modules

  • Demonstrated use of QINSy software and associated data analysis modules

  • Demonstrated use of with SeiSee Seismic analysis software

  • Demonstrated experience using GPS units, Total Stations, GIS (e.g., ESRI products), MS Office software (e.g., Word, Access), and graphical illustration software (e.g., Adobe).

  • Demonstrated experience writing technical reports and papers and familiarity with BOEM report requirements

  • Demonstrated experience working within Federal and State legal framework as related to CRM practices

  • Demonstrated competency with the interpretation of sub-bottom and shallow seismic data interpretation for identification of potential inundated prehistoric geomorphic features
