Position Summary

A position for biochemical and genetic studies on Batten disease, a childhood neurodegenerative disease, is available immediately. This is an exciting opportunity to gain experience in many facets of protein expression, purification, and crystallization, nanodiscs preparation, yeast fermentation, and more. Experience in biochemistry and molecular biology is essential. The candidate must be willing to learn new skills, interact with others, keep a detailed notebook, and eventually, to work independently. We are goal oriented reasonable goals are set for each day and week and thus the hours in each workday or week can vary. The position will be titled Research Assistant or Research Associate, or depending on the education and experience of the selected candidate. The salary is commensurate with experience. Essential Duties & Responsibilities
  • Construct gene constructs using standard Molecular Biology methods.
  • DNA sequence analysis and interpretation.
  • PCR, subcloning, and DNA plasmid preparation.
  • Construction of deletion mutations in yeast genome.
  • Growth of yeast in a 90l fermenter.
  • Protein purification and assay.
  • Preparation of nanodiscs for cryo-EM
  • Set crystal screens and test crystals for X-ray diffraction.
  • Learn additional skills as needed.
  • Perform other related duties as needed.

Required Education & Experience
  • B.S. in Biochemistry, Chemistry or related field.
  • Must achieve satisfactory results from a background check clearance.
  • Must have proof of COVID19 vaccination or a university approved exemption.

Required Knowledge Skills & Abilities
  • Fluent in English.
  • Excellent reading, writing and communication skills.
  • Technical requirements include skills in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology.
  • Ability to work well within a group setting.
  • Highly independent and self-motivated.
  • Familiar with standard Windows Office software, spreadsheet applications, and graphics applications.
  • Must demonstrate strong leadership experiences.
  • Ability to work and interact well with others of diverse backgrounds.
  • Extreme attention to detail with good notebook keeping.
  • Flexibility in working hours (long days and weekends if needed).
  • Excellent organizational and planning skills.
  • Ability to collect and analyze data.
  • Demonstrated project management skills, including ability to set priorities and excellent time management skills.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Recent graduate degree in Biochemistry or Molecular Biology.
