Job Description:

Amherst College invites applications for the Project Coordinator position. The Project Coordinator is a full-time, year-round, 2-year term position. Given Amherst's distinction as one of the most diverse liberal arts colleges in the country, the successful candidate will demonstrate the w ays in which they bring value to and will work towards supporting a broadly diverse community.

Amherst College was awarded a two-year grant from the Mellon Foundation to enhance scholarly and community access to the College's Younghee Kim-Wait/Pablo Eisenberg Literature Collection (the KWE Collection) of published works by Indigenous authors from North America. The Project Coordinator will work closely with the Head of the Archives & Special Collections and Native Studies faculty to consult and collaborate with tribal communities in our region and with project partners towards fostering a relational network and a digital interface that will be useful to tribal communities, Five College campus students and scholars, and Indigenous Studies scholars more broadly. The focus of the project coordinator will be on identifying community needs and opportunities for reciprocal collaboration while exploring new digital tools, including FOLIO, that can incorporate Indigenous knowledge and protocols into the library catalog and other collections management systems.

This work will build on the mission and vision statements developed at an IMLS-funded gathering hosted at Amherst in 2016 on the subject of a Digital Atlas of Native American Intellectual Traditions . The ideal candidate is someone working at the intersection of Native American and Indigenous Studies (NAIS) and Library and Information Science, specifically someone interested in Indigenous interventions in the systems in use by colonial libraries and archives. The Project Coordinator will also work with NAIS faculty who are teaching courses that incorporate the KWE Collection, and with students who will be working on collaborative projects developed in consultation with tribal communities. Candidates are not expected to be fluent in special collections librarianship or book history and will be mentored in these areas by the Frost Library team.

Summary of Duties and Responsibilities:

Coordinate visits of the Amherst team to tribal archives, libraries, and museums throughout the Northeast and visits to Amherst College by tribal scholars and community delegations. Responsibilities include actively building reciprocal partnership and respectful exchange, communicating and coordinating with communities, scheduling visits, arranging transportation through the college vehicle pool, tracking expenses, and all related logistics. Responsible for appropriate note-taking and documentation of these visits in consultation with community members.

Review the Native American Literature collection in the Archives & Special Collections. Working with the Head of the Archives & Special Collections and the Frost Library rare book cataloger, this position will review the current holdings to prepare for consultations with communities. One focus of these conversations will be to think together about how a colonial institution of higher education can genuinely serve the needs of tribal communities. Specifically, what community knowledge do we hold in the books in our collection? Are there books the community wants to attach notes to? Are there books the community does not want to circulate? What are the local contexts readers need to understand that we could highlight? Collection development funds are available to address gaps identified through these consultations.

Support classroom instruction and student research in NAIS. In collaboration with Amherst College faculty, this position will facilitate student learning and research in the KWE Collection, working with a diverse set of students from across the Five College Consortium. Coordinate with the Amherst College Teaching and Learning Center, Native Studies faculty and Five College, Inc. staff to enhance awareness and use of the KWE collection across the Five Colleges.

Develop recommendations for integrating Indigenous community knowledge into library systems. The Five College FOLIO Project ( https://www.folio.org ) presents an opportunity to develop library tools in an open source environment that could better support the needs of Indigenous communities. This position will explore the potential of FOLIO and other systems (Mukurtu, ArchivesSpace) and make recommendations for development of tools based on community consultations. Also responsible for developing recommendations for changes in current practice with existing tools with reference to current and developing protocols such as the SAA Protocols for Native American Materials.

  • Masters of Library and Information Science or equivalent
  • Experience working with Indigenous communities
  • Experience in an academic library, including reference, instruction, and cataloging
  • Experience with one or more library metadata content and encoding standards; familiarity with the MARC format, LCSH or other vocabulary/schema, AACR2/DCRM and RDA; experience with one or more tools to create, extract, transform, analyze, and manage quality of metadata records.
  • Experience with community outreach and engagement
  • Capacity for collaboration and network building
  • Commitment to working with a diverse and inclusive community
  • Knowledge of issues of equity and diversity in educational settings
  • Current driver's license
  • Experience with Indigenous students and/or NAIS programs
  • Coursework or demonstrated familiarity with Indigenous literatures and geographies
  • Familiarity with Native New England communities
  • Experience with network visualization tools and Digital Humanities in general
  • Familiarity with the history and legacies of library and archival practices in relation to Indigenous cultural property
  • Experience working in an archives or special collections and/or experience working in a tribal archive, library, or cultural center
  • Professional instruction or cataloging experience
  • Active participation in National organizations such as the Association of Tribal Archives, Libraries and Museums (ATALM) and the Native American and Indigenous Studies Association (NAISA)
