Job Description:

Amherst College invites applications for the Program Coordinator: Identity & Cultural Engagement position. The Program Coordinator: Identity & Cultural Engagement is a part-time, 20 hour per week position. Given Amherst's distinction as one of the most diverse liberal arts colleges in the country, the successful candidate will demonstrate the ways in which they bring value to and will work towards supporting a broadly diverse community.

Reporting to the Associate Dean of Students for Diversity & Inclusion, the Program Coordinator works in collaboration to develop and implement the Office of Identity and Cultural Resources' educational, cultural, and social programs/initiatives. The Program Coordinator is a core member of the OICR and supports the overall mission of the Office of Identity and Cultural Resources and Office of Student Affairs division. The Coordinator works in direct collaboration with the OICR-Class and Access Resource Center, Queer Resource Center, Center for International Student Engagement, Multicultural Resource Center, Women's & Gender Center, and Center for Religious and Spiritual life to increase community involvement in the Centers and to enhance students' understanding of various identities and their intersections. The Coordinator serves as an important resource to the campus community in building and supporting identity development and community engagement. The Coordinator is responsible for the creation of cultural and heritage programming, co-supervising student programmers in the resource centers and the development, coordination, and facilitation of various programs, events, and initiatives for and among students, staff, and faculty.

The Coordinator will have deep knowledge of and experience working with constituents around issues of race, ethnicity, ability, gender, sexual identity, gender identity and expression, religion, socioeconomic status, nationality, and first-generation status. The Coordinator will have demonstrated success in working with currently and historically marginalized people. The Coordinator will collaborate with others and be able to work with many different individuals, offices/departments, and academic units across campus.

Summary of Duties and Responsibilities

  • Create programmatic opportunities for students, staff, and faculty on campus, especially with a focus on topics race, ability, sexual identity, gender identity and expression, religion, class, nationality, etc.
  • Create virtual educational opportunities, programs, etc., to be delivered through various online platforms
  • Develop and implement a monthly OICR program that supports the Cultural and Heritage Month programming series
  • Work with the Directors of the OICR to enhance current ongoing programs in the centers
  • Assist in the planning and implementation of OICR campus wide events including: Orientation/LEAP, Mammoth Week, OICR Graduation/Senior Brunch Celebration, etc.
  • Create and manage an OICR programmatic calendar and program outreach.
  • Assist with OICR outreach events and open houses, including Diversity Open Houses, Meet-n-Greets, Alumni Week(s), etc.
  • Generate comprehensive assessment tools for the OICRs programs to track attendance, student feedback, and impact of resources
  • Design weekly promotional and advertising materials for OICR programs and initiatives
  • Co-develop and deliver the Social Justice and Leadership LEAP program for incoming FY and transfer students.
  • Supervise student staff in the development of educational resources and services that the OICR provides (pamphlets, website, social media, etc.)
  • Co-create and facilitate OICR student staff trainings
  • Work directly with affinity student organizations to plan, organize and implement programs and events to support the students and communities they represent
  • Purchase goods and services to meet programmatic needs
  • Serve on OICR, divisional, and College wide committees and working groups (Programming Committee, etc.)
  • Develop and deliver leadership development and skill building opportunities for students
  • Serve as an OICR liaison to various offices within Student Affairs and the College (Student Activities, Counseling Center, Health Education, Alumni and Parent Programs, etc.)

Supervision of Student Staff:
  • Support and mentor student staff, including direct supervision of student programmers
  • Mentor and advise student affinity groups in supporting their efforts to develop inclusive programming focused on issues of identity and inclusion
  • Work with directors to co-facilitate weekly student staff meetings
  • Meet with student staff to plan and assign duties as needed.

Performs other duties/functions as requested:
  • Attend bi-weekly Office of Identity and Cultural Resources professional staff meetings
  • Present at local and regional conferences
  • Represent the OICR at various events and outreach activities across the College
