SUMMARY OF DUTIES:
The Lead Software Engineer oversees major complex projects providingsubject matter expertise and technical direction, serving as a technical leadand point of escalation. The role is accountable and responsible forsystems analysis, design, development, integration, and enhancements.


The Lead Software Engineer will be expected to be involved and take alead technical role in daytoday enhancement and development ofAmtraks systems and will have demonstrated expertise in Cloudtechnology, system integration, upgrades and software development. Involvement may also include thefollowing: Debugging, code review, enhancement of code, trouble shooting, and testing.


This role works closely with stakeholders to understand the businessrequirements that drive the analysis and design of quality technicalsolutions. These solutions must be aligned with business goals and ITstrategies, as well as, in compliance with the organizations architecturalstandards.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Owns and leads the development approach as an engineeringexercise; confirms requirements are clear, follows a documenteddevelopment/build methodology and makes sure a robust unit andsystem/integration testing regimen is followed to deliver solutions perdesigns.
  • Outlines, develops and documents clear requirements and technicalspecifications that follow an established methodology.
  • Creates and updates documentation as necessary to ensurearchitectures, designs and other descriptions are up to date anddescribe the asdeployed system.
  • Consults in the development/build planning process with customers,IT business systems analysts, architects, information security, andother team members, taking the lead on all technical issues/solutions.
  • Conducts or contributes to the design specifications and assists insizing technical requirements.
  • Develops technical solutions to meet defined requirements includingchanges, enhancements or development of new infrastructure,platform and other systems.
  • May oversee or assist with oversight of thirdparty technical resourcesproviding services to Amtrak.
  • Ensures all work is in harmony with all defined industry and companystandards as well as ensures that overall implementation is alignedwith Amtrak's technology strategies.
  • Adheres to quality standards and procedures. Reviews modules forquality assurance and checks compliance with application architecturestandards and SLAs.
  • May assist in defining development guidelinesand standards to be utilized in system/solutiondevelopment/integration. Provides ongoing maintenance of systems,serving as a point of escalation.
  • Leads, guides and provides cross functional project oversight fortechnical teams/resources.
  • Assists in the development of user guides and trainingdocumentation. Provides technical guidance or system processexpertise for Production Operations & Maintenance teams.
  • Develops technical reports and presentations for senior management,as needed.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelors Degree in Computer Science, Information Systemsor Business Management plus 7+ years relevant experience or 11+years of relevant work experience in subject matter expertcapacity required to satisfy education and experience requirements
  • Experience with Java, Python, AWS Cloud, Relational Databases (Aurora, Dynamo or Redshift)
  • Broad systems development and/or systems analysis experience witha displayed mastery of multiple program languages, infrastructurecomponents or technology platforms.
  • Broad level of understanding of information systems and systemsarchitecture and integration standards.
  • Ability to focus on business goals while ensuring development iscompleted on time.
  • Ability to work well under deadlines and in a flexible environment.
  • Experience/indepth knowledge of business operations and systemsrequirements processes and ability to apply technical solutions tomeet business needs.
  • Proven ability to utilize adaptable communication skills to effectivelytranslate between technical and business language.
  • Experience in educating project team members on business unit goals,objectives, and initiatives, and guiding junior resources to developappropriate system solutions in alignment with business objectives.
  • Ability to identify, propose and oversee the execution of business andIT solutions as well as interpret documents communicating businessand IT needs and requirements.
  • Experience overseeing/managing thirdparty/vendor technical teamsand resources.
  • Excellent troubleshooting skills.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Masters Degree in Computer Science, Information Systems orBusiness Managementwith 9+ years relevant experience.

COMMUNICATIONS AND INTERPERSONAL SKILLS:

  • Must have excellent oral and written communication skills.

The salary range is $120,830-$156,600. Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to education, work experience, certifications, etc. Depending on an employees assigned worksite or location, Amtrak may consider a geo-pay differential to be applied to the employees base salary. Amtrak may offer additional incentive and pay programs to recognize and reward our employees, including a short-term incentive bonus based upon factors such as individual and company performance that is commensurate with the level of the position and/or long-term incentive plan compensation.
