The Principal Scientist Engineered Materials will leverage their scientific training and experience to develop new, ground-breaking technology for Balchem's human, animal, and plant nutrition businesses. Principal Scientists are expected to take on challenging technical problems and be able to lead research efforts that reduce concepts into next-generation and breakthrough new products. Will be a thought leader who contributes creative new ideas to the organization.


  • Safety: Champion safety in all activities, including design and execution of lab and pilot work, ensure that lab work is conducted in a safe manner via hazard reviews, SOP's, appropriate PPE
  • Act as the technical lead and Project Manager for a complex portfolio of new product projects:
    • Be the Technical Project Leader (PM) and/or lead scientist on new product develop projects (Balchem AIM projects) focused on, but not limited to, engineered materials designed for nutritional markets
    • These projects will involve significant technical complexity and will require the management of cross-functional teams and/or external resources
  • Become the internal expert, with deep fundamental knowledge of engineered materials and Balchem's technology such as microencapsulation, spray-drying, agglomeration, and end-use technology rumen-protected nutrients, and choline science
  • Contribute creative ideas for new products that will provide long-term competitive advantage in the markets in which Balchem participates
  • Insure the laboratory facilities are adequately designed to execute projects in the portfolio, recommend new equipment as needed to advance projects, maintain existing equipment
  • Potentially supervise technicians and/or junior scientists, insure they work safely, have yearly goals and objectives, and that they have career development plans in place
  • Mentor junior scientists and technicians who are not formal direct reports
  • Operate at the interface of functional disciplines, coordinate the activities of specialists to design work programs, participate in their execution to provide support to all variety of technical projects involving engineered materials
  • Travel to the Balchem plants, develop close relationships with key Operations personnel
  • Scan the patent and technical literature and alert the organization to technology developments outside of Balchem
  • Interface with Technical and Commercial Experts in the Human Nutrition & Pharma, Animal Nutrition & Health, and Plant Nutrition business units to promote the application knowledge of choline and insure coordination between R&D and the business units
  • Meet with customers and represent Balchem's technology as required
  • Represent Balchem in industry groups and trade associations
  • Be an external face for Balchem in the technical community; publish articles, file patents, and make presentations at industry association meetings
  • Prepare and deliver project presentations and monthly reports to Balchem's Operating Committee and Chief Technology Officer


  • Must have and advanced technical degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Microbiology, or related technology: MS degree with minimum 15 years of professional industrial experience or a Ph.D. degree with a minimum 10 years of industrial experience
  • Preferred industrial experience in the food, nutraceutical, or pharmaceutical industries or suppliers to these industries
  • Proven technical expert with chemistry bench skills, research experience, and proven track record of successful project execution and patent filing
  • Ability to lead large, complex, multifunctional projects; track record of on time delivery of multiple initiatives on one or more complex projects
  • Excellent understanding of safe laboratory practices and a demonstrated history of safety leadership
  • Proven ability to communicate project progress both in written and oral form; comfort around high-level management in oral project presentations
  • Proven track record of ideation: can develop ideas that help advance the organization's ability to generate value for our customers
  • Proven track record of scale up in an industrial setting
  • Proven ability to generate ideas for new product and improved processes
  • Successful history of management of technicians or junior level scientists


  • Work is partially sedentary and in a lab setting
