The Legal Department of JPMorgan Chase & Co provides legal services and advice to the Firm globally. Legal is responsible for, among other things:

 
  • managing actual and potential litigation and enforcement matters, including internal reviews and investigations related to such matters

  • advising on products and services, including contract negotiation and documentation

  • advising on offering and marketing documents and new business initiatives

  • managing dispute resolution
  • interpreting existing laws, rules and regulations, and advising on changes thereto

  • advising on advocacy in connection with contemplated and proposed laws, rules and regulations, and

  • providing legal advice to the Board of Directors, the business and functions. Legal selects, engages and manages outside counsel for the Firm on all matters in which outside counsel is engaged.

 

About the Office of Legal Obligations.  The Office of Legal Obligations (“OLO”) is a firmwide, global initiative to identify and document JPMC’s legal obligations arising from material laws, rules, and regulations, and connect those obligations to policies, procedures, and/or other documentation that supports compliance with the obligations.

 

The OLO Legal Drafting team supports this initiative by overseeing Legal’s effort to build the inventory of material laws, rules, and regulations that impact the Firm; drafting business friendly descriptions of the legal obligations that arise from those laws, rules, and regulations; and supporting the ongoing efforts of the business and our functional partners as they link the legal obligations to the control documentation that helps JPMC ensure compliance.  

  

For the program, JPMC requires experienced individuals with strong legal and regulatory awareness and background, able to understand the risks to the Lines of Business and the Firm of non-compliance with laws and regulations.  This role will require significant cross-functional collaboration, including with line of business lawyers and their counterparts in the Firm’s corporate functions.  It also will require engagement with external counsel.  The environment is fast-paced, often requiring that issues be addressed quickly to ensure that the Firm stays in compliance with the rapidly-evolving rules that apply to our highly regulated industry.  The successful candidate must have strong analytical and collaborative skills, be able to work independently, and be a true "self-starter."

 
 

Primary Responsibilities will include:

  • Participate on cross-functional teams to develop and maintain legal obligations.
  • Collaborate with appropriate product area lawyers to enhance consistency of legal positions.
  • Routinely research and analyze laws, rules, regulations and other legal and regulatory developments to assess impacts on the firm’s products, services and businesses.
  • Build and manage product subject matter expertise, as required.
  • Serve as a Program liaison through collaborative advocacy and excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Prepare, and maintain on an ongoing basis, matrices and other job aids to support program reporting and project tracking.
  • Research and analyze laws, rules, regulations and prior project work in order to promote evergreen efforts of the Program, focusing on quality assurance and consistency.
  • Support senior team attorneys in their project liaison and remediation efforts.
  • Collaborate with others on initiatives to monitor changes in law and regulation at the state and federal level.
  • Provide written summaries of obligations and changes to existing laws, rules and regulations.
  • Work collaboratively with legal, compliance, risk, and oversight and controls teams responsible for parts of the Program, as needed.
  • Provide feedback and frameworks to project management and technology teams to better improve functionality of the repository data base.
  • Occasional research to support special projects as needed.



Qualifications
  • JD or educational equivalent
  • At least three years of legal experience practicing law post JD, preferably with legislation or regulation of financial services or other highly regulated industries  
  • Attorney candidates must be licensed to practice law and in compliance with all relevant licensing requirements including the requirements of the jurisdiction where the role will be located prior to commencement of employment.
  • Experience researching and analyzing laws, rules and regulations
  • Strong organizational and project management skills
  • Detail-oriented, with a structured, disciplined approach
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills, advocacy skills, good team player and ability to prioritize workload
  • Analytical, flexible and pragmatic
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint
  • All candidates for roles in the Legal department must successfully complete a conflicts of interest clearance review prior to commencement of employment. 
Preferred Skills:
  • Prior legal experience supporting financial services institutions or another highly regulated entity, and familiarity with international, federal, and state regulation of financial products and/or familiarity with tax law
  • Proficiency in one or more languages in addition to English is helpful but not required.
