The Legal Department of JPMorgan Chase & Co provides legal services and advice to the Firm globally. Legal is responsible for, among other things:

  • managing actual and potential litigation and enforcement matters, including internal reviews and investigations related to such matters
  • advising on products and services, including contract negotiation and documentation
  • advising on offering and marketing documents and new business initiatives
  • managing dispute resolution
  • interpreting existing laws, rules and regulations, and advising on changes thereto
  • advising on advocacy in connection with contemplated and proposed laws, rules and regulations, and
  • providing legal advice to the Board of Directors, the business and functions. Legal selects, engages and manages outside counsel for the Firm on all matters in which outside counsel is engaged.

About the Office of Legal Obligations.  The Office of Legal Obligations (OLO) is a firmwide program responsible for developing and executing a sustainable infrastructure and process that (i) documents JPMorgan Chase’s Obligations arising from material laws, rules and regulatory requirements and (ii) connects the Obligations to policies, when applicable, as well as to procedures or other documentation that support compliance with those laws, rules and regulatory requirements.


The overall OLO program goal is to improve the control environment regarding the laws and regulations of the firm. The OLO program helps allow the firm to trace end-to-end connections between laws, rules, regulations and policies and procedures. 


For the program, JPMC requires experienced individuals with regulatory awareness and background, able to understand the risks to the Lines of Business and the Firm of non-compliance with laws and regulations.  The ideal candidate will help all JPMC businesses in all geographies enter and maintain Legal Obligations that apply to JPMC across the various businesses in the Firmwide Legal Obligation Library.  The individual will support cross-enterprise efforts of lawyers to monitor, identify and document all federal, state and local laws affecting the Firm’s products.  The role requires significant cross-functional collaboration, including with line of business lawyers, their Compliance counterparts, as well as counterparts in Risk and Oversight and Controls.  The environment is fast-paced, often requiring that issues be addressed rapidly - to ensure the firm stays in compliance with the rapidly-evolving federal, state, and other rules that may apply to our highly regulated industry.  The successful candidate must have strong analytical and collaborative skills, be able to work independently and be a true "self- starter."


Primary Responsibilities will include:

  • Participate in multiple projects throughout the day, utilizing project management skills.
  • Manage day-to-day operational aspects of various projects and ensure work output of all involved.
  • Deliver timely, fact based information about the progress of projects. Create concise high quality reports/presentations/communication materials for senior management.
  • Collaborate with team members across lines of business and cross functional teams and provide process solutions that drive speed and accuracy.
  • Drive and facilitate discussions and activities across functional teams to ensure a coordinated effort.
  • Develop standards and methodologies for analyzing large amounts of information, pulling out key messages.
  • Demonstrate a controls-based mindset.
  • Facilitate continuous improvement by harvesting lessons learned and identifying reuse opportunities.
  • Occasional research to support special projects as needed.
  • 3+ years of relevant professional experience as a business analyst in a legal department, business operation, and or technical environment.
  • Strong analytic and questioning skills and ability to distill large amounts of information into key messages.
  • Ability to understand complex legal concepts and issues, and have the skills needed to organize a process around the issues to achieve thorough and expedient resolutions.
  • Have an understanding of process definition and process improvement methodologies.
  • Ability to lead small working groups of attorneys and organize their legal analysis and other work products.
  • Ability to manage meetings towards achieving a set of objectives in an organized and timely manner.
  • Effective project management skills
  • Intermediate skills in Excel
  • Advanced PowerPoint skills.
  • Bachelor's Degree required.
  • All candidates for roles in the Legal department must successfully complete a conflicts of interest clearance review prior to commencement of employment.
