UW Medicines IT Services department has an outstanding opportunity for a Manager, Data Engineering! UW Medicines Information Technology Services (ITS) department is a shared services organization that supports all of UW Medicine. UW Medicine is comprised of Harborview Medical Center (HMC), UW Medical Center-Montlake (UWMC-Montlake), UW Medical Center-Northwest (UWMC-NW), Valley Medical Center (VMC), UW Neighborhood Clinics (UWNC), UW Physicians (UWP), UW School of Medicine (SOM) and Airlift Northwest (ALNW). In addition, UW Medicine shares in the ownership and governance of Childrens University Medical Group and Seattle Cancer Care Alliance (a partnership between UW Medicine, Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research and Seattle Childrens). ITS is responsible for the ongoing support and maintenance of the infrastructure and applications which support all of these institutions, along with the implementation of new services and applications that are used to support and further the UW Medicine mission. In conjunction with UW Medicine IT Services (ITS) and UW Medicine executive leadership, the primary focuses of the Data Engineering Manager (Manager) position are: Collaborating with the business and clinical partners across UW Medicine to develop and manage the data warehouse solution that will support analysis of financial, operational, and strategic activities, and Leading a team in collaborative efforts across the enterprise in the management of applications and platforms, data organization and modeling, and the development and implementation of a complex enterprise data warehouse. Areas of responsibility include, but are not limited to: Providing leadership and management to a team of data architects, analytics developers, and data modelers; Developing best practices, processes and tools by which the Data Engineering team can efficiently manage and build platforms and organize and data models; Collaborating with ITS Project Management Office (PMO) and Change Management and Release teams to align with their processes and demands; Collaborating with technical operations teams in UW Medicine ITS and UW IT and with vendors to identify improvements to our services and opportunities to reduce costs overall; Defining internal operational and service level agreements, as well as improving ITIL-based operational processes to meet these agreements Fostering relationships with the many different business customers to organize their requests, communicate status and progress, set priorities and provide training; and Supporting executive and operational governance groups and processes. RESPONSIBILITIES Operations (60%) Analytics Solutions Delivery The Manager is responsible for development of the best practices, processes and tools by which our teams efficiently provide reporting and analytics solutions to the enterprise. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: Coordinate overall technical solution delivery, including development and improvements for the Analytics Data Platform solution stacks. Support implementation of Core Data Management, partnering especially with the Data Services Assistant Director. Manage, monitor and continuously improve Analytics data delivery methods, ensuring transparency and a high degree of customer service. Customer Engagement This is a customer facing role with a high degree of direct and critical communications and facilitation with UW Medicine business partners. The Managers productive collaboration with his/her customer stakeholders is core to the success of the analytics team in the optimal delivery of analytics solutions and other work for UW Medicines analytics clinical and business customers. The Manager will have regular interaction with management and leadership from across UW Medicine. Establishment of effective customer relationships is critical to the effectiveness of this role. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: Build and maintain effective working relationships with analytics customers throughout business and clinical departments. Participate in Agile scrum and sprint planning meetings, and in other requirements gathering meetings, as appropriate, supporting the needs of the team and program(s), and acting as a leader as necessary. Establish best practices, processes, customer service standards, and communications standards to ensure external customers have appropriate visibility to our internal service level agreements, and to the status of requests and projects. Analytics Group Collaboration The Manager plays a key role in the ITS Services and Analytics management team. As such, this roles collaboration is critical to the development and continuous improvement of the Analytics group. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: Partner with Analytics management team and ITS Services management teams to continuously improve organization. Working with colleagues, identify challenges and inter-team solutions. Coordinate activities and projects with other leaders/managers in IT Services where interdependencies exist. Vendor Management The Manager may serve as a representative of UW Medicine, IT Services, and the Analytics group to multiple software and services vendors. Development of an appropriate relationship with the vendors serves to make efficient use of UW Medicine resources. Additionally, the Analytics Development function may have a role in the management of the Request for Quotations and Qualifications (RFQQ) and Request for Proposal (RFP) process for some Analytics procurements. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: Serve as primary contact for the vendor Analytics counterpart for vendor project deliverables, vendor resource issues, and the delivery of application components during a project lifecycle. Collaborate with vendors to optimize assignment of appropriate resources in a timely manner. Ensure vendors fulfill contractual and other obligations to UW Medicine. Leadership and Management (40%) The Manager is responsible for managing and growing a team of BI Developers in the delivery of data solutions. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: Organize, lead, coach and motivate a team of Leads and BI Developers, and others, stretching all players to higher levels of responsibility and accountability, and continuing to develop Agile skills and processes. Work with group Director to carry out the vision for areas of responsibility to support the mission of UW Medicine. Collaborate with all areas of ITS to ensure a single IT Vision to support the mission and vision of UW Medicine. REQUIREMENTS Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Business Administration, or related field or equivalent combination of education and experience. 6+ years experience must include: 4+ years experience leading and managing a technical team, preferably a team of size >5. Demonstrated management and leadership capabilities with proven ability to influence in matrix environment. Proven ability to make administrative/procedural decisions and provide guidance and leadership to staff. 2+ years experience with Agile, preferably in project leadership role. 2+ years working in a technical role, preferably working with data pipelines and warehouses 2+ years experience leading process and service improvements in a technical environment. 2+ years experience leading teams in a complex technical environment, while successfully partnering with other technical groups. DESIRED 2+ years experience with data and reporting solution delivery. 1+ years experience with ITIL and/or service management. 1+ years experience working with large data sets. Additionally, candidates should have experience with Epic applications, Go-Live and/or Data Warehousing experience. Ability to understand complex data models and schemas. Strong understanding of dashboards, KPIs, and visualization concepts. Experience with formal project management methods. Previous experience in a healthcare environment and knowledge of the healthcare industry. Technical background in Agile (Scrum/Kanban) development, ITIL/service management and Azure/cloud solution development. CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT This is an Information Technology deadline-driven work environment. The individual in this position is expected to work normal daytime hours. The work may be performed in either an office environment or by telecommuting with manager approval, during normal business hours; however, significant off-hours and weekends may be needed to resolve problems and respond to emergencies. This individual is expected to be available for emergencies (business continuity/disaster recovery efforts) on a 24x7 basis as needed. Must coordinate projects without direct supervisory authority.
