SUMMARY OF DUTIES:
The Lead Software Engineer provides high quality software systems byanalyzing requirements, providing technical design, developing software,supporting testing and deployment. The Lead Software Engineer worksclosely with customers, business analysts and team members tounderstand the business requirements that drive the analysis and design ofquality technical solutions. These solutions must be aligned with businessand IT strategies and in compliance with the organizations architecturalstandards. Responsible for analyzing and bringing new technology trendsin the industry to Amtrak. The role is also a point of escalation foroperational support for assigned systems.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Provides technical leadership as part of a diverse team and providesconsistent ownership for increasingly complex deliverables.
  • Works on projects that may span a broad range of systems. Requiresexpertise in multiple technical environments and possesses anincreased level of business knowledge.
  • Consults in the project planning process with customers, IT businessanalysts, architects, and team members.
  • Organizes and documents technical requirements. Creates technicaldesign specifications and assists in sizing technical requirements.
  • Works with customers to develop and analyze application packagesand tools and determine optimum functionality requirements to meetthose needs.
  • Collaborates with enterprise architect and infrastructure to integrateapplications and hardware.
  • Ensures that the design and application implementation meet securityand QA standards.
  • Evaluates new application packages and tools.
  • Provides multiple recommendations for the solutions.
  • Evaluates existing applications and platform and providesrecommendations for system enhancements by conducting gapanalysis, identifying feasible alternative solutions, and assisting in thescope of modifications.
  • Participates on teams that outline the process and scope out theimprovements that can be realized through the application solution.
  • May lead the deployment of new modules, upgrades, and fixes.
  • Implements integration plans. Interfaces with testing teams toincorporate plans into integration testing process.
  • Defines, develops, or modifies software application modules orenterprisewide software systems using disciplined developmentprocesses.
  • Identifies better sources of data feeds and interfaces with architects toensure their feasibility with corporate data warehouse, when needed.
  • Documents functions and changes to new or modified modules, testactivities/results and other areas such as error handling andbackup/recovery procedures.
  • Adheres to quality standards and procedures. Reviews modules forquality assurance and checks compliance with application architecturestandards and Service Level Agreements (SLAs).
  • May assist in defining development guidelines and standards to beutilized in software development/integration.
  • Makes modules productionready by moving them to libraries,completing forms, following procedures, completing version controldocuments, etc.
  • Provides ongoing maintenance of applications.
  • May produce and analyze data extracts from system based on userrequirements.
  • Provides technical leadership coaching and mentoring to teammembers. Provides technical guidance or system process expertise.
  • Develops reports and presentations for senior management, asneeded.
  • May manage vendor relationships that are required to provideoperational support
  • May coordinate preventative maintenance activities between vendors,IT and the business, including the installation of service packs, patches,
  • and hot fixes.
  • Keeps abreast of new technical standards and practices.
  • Analyzes/monitors applications to ensure that the functionality andperformance meets all product and service level requirements

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • 6+ years relevant experience
  • General Web, Cloud & Mobility Background. Strong knowledge of coreInternet (HTTP, Mail, REST, DB, Data Modeling etc.)
  • Strong documentation and communication skills. Ability to articulatecomplex architectures in actionable terms.
  • Highly proficient knowledge of algorithms, data structures, designpatterns and the experience with programming languages is required.
  • Extremely proficient in frontend (Web) or backend (Server) or mobileapplication development or cloud platform services.
  • Strong ability to understand Amtraks production business processes and create solutions using SAP technologies addressing the current and future needs of the organization
  • Involved in at least two full cycle SAP implementations of the SAP product being supported
  • Extensive experience programming and/or systems analysisexperience with a displayed mastery of multiple program languages.
  • Extensive experience with Agile methodologies and techniquesincluding SCRUM and SAFE frameworks
  • Have a broad level of understanding surrounding information systemsand application architecture standards.
  • Perform development of customer enhancements, and maintenancetasks using programming experience in Microsoft Stack (C#, ASP.NET, JavaScript, SQL Server, HTML, CSS).
  • Knowledge of AWS or any other public cloud computing platform will be preferred.
  • Must have experience/indepth knowledge of business operations andsystems requirements processes including ability to measure shortand longterm business goals.
  • Must possess the ability to utilize adaptable communication skills toeffectively translate between technical and business language.
  • Must possess the skill to educate project team members on businessunit goals and objectives and educate the business on the value ofinformation technology.
  • Ability to identify, propose and oversee the execution of businesssolutions as well as interpret documents communicating business needs and requirements.
  • Must possess the skill to assess the client needs through directinteraction and identify opportunities to develop the business througheffective use of technology.
  • Excellent troubleshooting skills.
  • Excellent communication skills both oral and written.
  • Must be a problem solver, team player and demonstrate flexibility toadjust to fluid business requirement changes.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the full IT development lifecycle andfamiliar with Agile/Scrum development environment.
  • Must be able to work on multiple tasks concurrently.
  • Must be able to reliably estimate time and effort required to completea task.
  • Ability to quickly learn and understand complex applications andtechnologies.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • 8+ years relevant experience
  • Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, specializedtraining, certification, or equivalent work experience.
  • Experience in travel, hospitality or transportation industries

COMMUNICATIONS AND INTERPERSONAL SKILLS:

  • Must have excellent oral and written communication skills.
