Amherst has taken a leadership role among highly selective liberal arts colleges and universities in successfully diversifying the racial, socio-economic, and geographic profile of its student body. The College is similarly committed to enriching its educational experience and its culture through the diversity of its faculty, administration and staff.

Job Description:

Amherst College invites applications for the Humanist Advisor (Casual, No Benefits) position. The Humanist Advisor is a part time position that works August 15 - May 31, not including school vacation periods, at an average of 7 hours per week. Given Amherst's distinction as one of the most diverse liberal arts colleges in the country, the successful candidate will demonstrate the ways in which they bring value to and will work towards supporting a broadly diverse community.

The Humanist Advisor serves a vital function in the Office of Religious and Spiritual Life in supporting our Humanist, atheist, agnostic, secular, and spiritual but not religious (SBNR) community (particularly students), and our broader campus more generally. While primarily focused on Humanist programming and pastoral care, the Humanist Advisor also contributes to interfaith, contemplative, and service programs sponsored by the Office. The Advisor provides a welcoming ministry to a diverse student population and College community, and takes appropriate actions to support a diverse workforce by participating in the College's efforts to create a respectful, inclusive, and welcoming work environment. The position mainly requires weekday work hours, with the exception of creating and facilitating a weekly evening program at a time to be determined. Flexibility and availability for select additional evening and weekend programs (e.g. panels, vigils, etc.) is expected.

While this role typically works August 15 - May 31, we anticipate holding one or two onboarding meetings the week of August 9, 2021, for which compensation will be provided. This is a 5-year funded role, after which point the position and available funding sources will be reassessed.
