For more than 79 years, the USOa private, nonprofit organizationhas served the men and women of the U.S. military, and their families, throughout their time in uniform from the moment they join, through their deployments and as they transition back to their communities.

Today's USO continuously adapts to the needs of our men and women in uniform and their families, so they can focus on their very important mission. We operate USO centers at or near military installations across the United States and throughout the world, including in combat zones, and even un-staffed USO service sites in places too dangerous for anyone but combat troops to occupy.

The Grant and Stewardship Manager is responsible for securing grant-related revenue and assisting with donor acknowledgement.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities (*Essential Duties)

  • In coordination with the USO Development and Marketing teams, design framework, research data points, develop and compose high quality concept documents, narratives, proposals, reports and other media that leverage USO assets, optimize storytelling and create customized donor reports that aid in reaching fundraising goals. *
  • Manage the research, identification, cultivation and long term strategies of potential grant funding sources from a variety of sponsors and funding agencies, including but not limited to federal, state, non-profit/foundation, private sponsors and institutional supporters. *
  • Establish and manage a formal grant application process to include the preparation, submission, and monitoring of grant status.*
  • Design, establish and maintain stewardship related documents and media records for the development team including but not limited to a calendar of proposal deadlines and reporting requirements, current and historical proposals and backup documentation. *
  • Proactively manages projects and resolves obstacles to effective and timely completion. Coordinates with multiple teams, departments, and vendors to meet deadlines and successfully accomplish project goals on time and within budgetary parameters. *
  • Other duties as assigned.

Job Specification

  • Bachelor's Degree in English or related field.
  • 5+ years work experience in a grant-writing or creative writing role. Relevant experience in a sales/revenue process environment at a not-for-profit, military, multicultural and/or global organization preferred.
  • Demonstrated success meeting and/or exceeding established revenue goals.
  • Working knowledge of full-cycle grant writing process. Ability to read, comprehend, interpret and apply grant regulations and proposal guides. Ability to maintain high levels of writing standards and integrity.
  • Strong interpersonal, customer service and problem-solving skills. Ability to interact with USO Leadership, the general public and military audiences at a variety of levels with integrity and professionalism.
  • Proficiency using computers and electronics equipment. General knowledge of various software, applications, and programs including but not limited to Microsoft Office Suite and Raiser's Edge. General Knowledge of various photo and video editing software a plus.
  • Demonstrated ability to exercise sound judgment related to controversial and/or culturally sensitive subjects. Ability to handle confidential information with tact and poise.
  • Must show initiative, self-motivation, and attention to detail with the ability to manage multiple projects with competing priorities. Ability to quickly and easily adapt to changing organizational needs.
  • Ability to achieve desired results while working collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Ability to perform basic business/accounting functions including project management and budget reconciliation.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain proper credentials necessary to access USO Center locations and facilities including but not limited to security, credit and/or background screening, SOFA status, valid driver's license.
  • Must be a strong advocate of the USO's mission.


  • This position is located in Arlington, VA. Preference will be given to local candidates within commuting distance to the location. Relocation assistance or remote working arrangements may be considered for highly qualified candidates.
