This internship within Amtrak Engineerings Project Delivery Organization will provide exposure to key business processes within the department, including the development of annual and multi-year capital plans and track outage plans and capital program delivery reports, and help facilitate cross-agency coordination with external stakeholders, including the Federal Railroad Administration, Amtraks Office of Inspector General, and NEC Commission member agencies.

The intern will work collaboratively with staff at all levels across the department to obtain project, program, and other information needed for the development of capital investment plans for the Northeast Corridor and provide technical support to Engineering staff, including project and construction managers, as needed.

The intern will make new contacts in the transportation industry and acquire skills and knowledge related to capital project delivery, including project/program initiation, planning, execution, monitoring/reporting, and controls. In addition, the intern will have opportunities to visit production and construction projects along right of way to gain exposure to field work.

This is an exciting opportunity to gain knowledge about the operations and business practices of Americas busiest passenger rail corridor, learn about the fundamentals of railroad infrastructure and key NEC assets (i.e., major bridges, tunnels, and stations), and support the development of capital investments plans for the NEC which help inform future funding needs and requests.


  • Supports the collection, review, and analysis of large data sets (qualitative and quantitative).
  • Applies critical thinking skills to address complex challenges, issues, and processes and ensure that lessons learned are used to improve project management, construction management, and project delivery practices.
  • Maintains a teamwork environment with peers as well as the Engineering departments internal customers.


  • Must be actively pursuing a degree at an accredited educational institution.
  • Must be actively pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree in Civil Engineering, Transportation Planning, or Public Administration/Public Policy.
  • Must have at least 1 year of academic undergraduate studies completed or a sophomore status at minimum.
  • Must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher.


  • Interest in the railroad industry, especially passenger rail operations and the Northeast Corridor.
  • Interest in policy, strategy, and process improvement.
  • Interest or experience using business intelligence tools (such as Power BI, Tableau, or similar) to visualize and analyze data.
  • Willingness to learn and openness to new experiences, including spending time in the field
  • Proficiency in Microsoft applications, especially Excel, Word, Access, and PowerPoint.

Must have excellent oral and written communication skills
