About the position:

The Executive Director of JFFLabs is an exciting and newly structured leadership role at the organization, with an ultimate focus on leading and driving JFFLabs forward in this next chapter, beyond its start-up phase. With a strong team in place, the Executive Director will work closely with each of the core pillars of JFFLabs to ensure strong strategy direction and implementation of all activities as well as connectivity across activities. The Executive Director will provide dynamic, visionary, and inclusive leadership, with the ability to execute on that vision and put bold ideas into action. This individual will also serve as the connective tissue between Labs and JFF, working closely with the President & CEO of JFF and other key executives to increase resources, capacity, and efficiency to meet the organizations ambitious goals. The Executive Director reports to Maria Flynn, President and CEO of JFF, and serves on JFFs 12-person Executive Team.

The Executive Director will be part of a very creative, well-positioned, and growing nonprofit organization that seeks to leverage social investment partnerships to bring transformative products and ideas to market. This leader will develop strategy and pipeline, build on previous successes, and accelerate impact. The JFFLabs team includes more than 10 staff members and is projected to continue to grow rapidly.

What you'll do:


  • Drive vision and strategy, in partnership with the Labs team and JFF leadership, including JFFs President and CEO, Chief Operating Officer, and Senior Vice President, to build on current successes, build and scale pipeline, and accelerate impact
  • Further cultivate JFFLabs as a pioneer and thought leader that is advancing education systems and workforce development
  • Serve as the external face of JFFLabs and ensure proper representation and visibility in the media, at high-level forums and conferences, and across diverse audiences, including but not limited to key stakeholders across the private and public sectors, with corporate leaders, policy makers, and the philanthropic community
  • Serve as an internal and external thought leader and partner in advancing JFFs and JFFLabs mission of economic advancement for all

Organizational Management

  • Lead, develop, empower, and grow a high-quality staff of builders and innovators who are driving progress in a unique environment that is part start-up, part traditional nonprofit that continues to evolve in response to current and future landscapes
  • Oversee business affairs, quality standards, effective implementation, and engagement with all stakeholders
  • Embrace and maintain a team environment that is creative, impact-oriented, generative, and highly-collaborative
  • Enhance a data-driven, accountable culture committed to high performance, continuous improvement and impact through appropriate performance management systems, working closely with JFFs Vice President, People & Culture
  • Oversee Labs planning and budgeting processes, working closely with JFFs Vice President, Finance to maintain a sound financial basis for Labs, supporting both short-term and long-term needs and objectives

Fundraising and Business Development

  • Serve as a chief partnership builder, fundraiser, and creative connector by cultivating and maintaining relationships with key funders and partners and by forging new and innovative strategic partnerships and alliances
  • Develop a sound strategy for diversifying and expanding JFFLabs funding base
  • Ensure that JFFLabs maintains a reputation as a pioneering leader in education and workforce development and is an entity of choice amongst potential partners and funders

Who you are:

The Executive Director will be a dynamic leader with a genuine passion and equity lens to drive economic advancement for all. This individual will have a demonstrated track record as an entrepreneurial and innovative leader who has experience bringing ideas to market, building strategic partnerships, managing diverse internal and external stakeholders, and raising capital.

The ideal candidate will likely possess cross-sector experience in a start-up, fast-paced, growth-oriented environment in a relevant area of ed and workforce tech, investing, and/or strategy consulting, and will bring agility and comfort across a wide variety of responsibilities. While the Executive Director will bring a diversity of professional experiences, the ideal candidate will demonstrate a passion for JFFs mission, and have experience working in mission-driven organizations.

Ideal qualifications include:

  • High energy and passion for JFFs mission, with an ability to apply JFFs core values to all areas of your work
  • Ability to develop and drive new and innovative ideas within a traditional sector and organizational structure
  • 10+ years of experience in senior management and executive positions in relevant environments with success in building and scaling a business or social enterprise
  • Direct experience with and strong understanding of issues of economic opportunity, ed tech, and/or workforce development
  • Ability to provide leadership, vision, and strategy to diverse internal and external stakeholders in an ever-evolving environment
  • Demonstrated growth mindset with ability to create and maintain standards of high performance and accountability, and foster innovation, continuous learning and improvement
  • Success in raising and directing capital from a variety of sources; experience working with investors, donors, and F500 companies within the private sector
  • Ability to attract, hire, lead, and inspire top talent, as well as develop, maintain, and enhance an organizational infrastructure and systems to build and support growth
  • Demonstrated business acumen, including familiarity with budgeting, financial management including oversight, and working with senior leadership to manage fiscal and fiduciary accountability
  • Excellent communication and public speaking skills to influence and promote JFFLabs to investors, donors, and other audiences
  • Demonstrated inclusive leadership, with an ability to work effectively with diverse staff, and build and steward an organizational culture that embraces diversity, equity, and inclusion
  • Success building positive, effective, and collaborative cultures and teams
