Alfred State is seeking a proactive and energetic Educational Opportunity Program (EOP) Academic Counselor with excellent communication and problem-solving skills. This counselor will provide group and individualized academic advising, instruction, programmatic and educational support with emphasis on motivation, study strategies, and peer study groups to students within the EOP program. The academic counselor reports to a Coordinator of Opportunity Programs, and works closely with student success staff, academic advisors, as well as admissions, student records and financial services, health & wellness services and residential life to provide holistic supports to EOP students.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Assist in recruitment of, and all communications to, our EOP students.
  • Serve as a mentor/coach for academic, personal, financial, and social concerns.
  • Promote a culture of student success across campus by collaborating with colleagues in the EOP department, Student Success Center, Academic Advising Center, faculty and staff, as well as admissions, student records and financial services, health & wellness services and residential life to provide holistic supports to EOP students.
  • Create and monitor course schedules and monitor and provide action on early warnings (Starfish). Keep up-to-date and consistent case notes in database systems.
  • Provide effective academic skills assessment and support in the areas of college reading and writing, quantitative skills, information literacy, critical thinking, independent learning, time management and study skills.
  • Provide individual and group instruction on successful study strategies, the development of peer study groups and maintaining motivation and focus.
  • Conduct workshops and teach classes focusing on academic success for new students throughout the academic year, including the EOP summer program, and probation students.
  • Assist in summer program development, planning and implementation.
  • Provide instruction and/or tutoring as part of our supplemental instruction or structured learning projects in an area of expertise or need.
  • Develop and conduct leadership classes with a focus on learning as a life-long pursuit.
  • Systematically and continuously monitor data collection to ensure that program activities are related to learning outcomes and document the uses of these findings for corrective action, improvement, and accountability.
  • Establish and maintain effective communication & working relationships with internal and external constituents. Ability to accept supervision, assignments, change, and correction.
  • Provide proactive planning, strong mediation and problem-solving skills.
  • Participate in regular professional development to stay up-to-date with current trends in student success and support systems to at-risk populations
  • Create, implement, and evaluate our support programs to address the needs of EOP students.
  • Serve as a liaison for the EOP program on college-wide committees and program expert to provide training, services, and activities to raise departmental and campus awareness of issues affecting EOP students.

Job Requirements:

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's Degree required, Master's Degree strongly preferred.
  • Demonstrated commitment to our academic programs and the college's mission.
  • Education and or experience in at least one of the following: academic advising, career development, course-scheduling, teaching financial literacy, social work, school counseling.
  • Strong intrapersonal and interpersonal written and oral communication skills.
  • Experience working with economically and educationally disadvantaged college-aged students.
  • Candidate must demonstrate an understanding of the importance of diversity, equity, inclusion and advocacy in a college environment, familiarity with the Arthur O Eve Higher Education Opportunity Program, a plus
  • Social work experience, or education, a plus. (For example: assisting students setting up travel to and from campus, assisting students with setting up health benefits or completing a FAFSA, helping students schedule a driving test, helping students navigate personal situations that impact education success.)
  • Higher education financial aid services and/or college admissions knowledge a plus.
  • Fluency in Spanish, a plus
  • Solid knowledge of Microsoft Office software (specifically, Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams) and ability to use Banner, Starfish, Task Stream systems, as well as the ability to stay current with and embrace emerging office technologies.
  • Some occasional evening and weekends may be required.
  • This is an 11 or 12-month position based on interest, experience and qualifications.
