Rate of Pay: $87,891.96 to $92,286.55 per year

Job Duties: Analyze the condition of track geometry, and track structure and substructure on all Amtrak-owned or maintained rights-of-way to ensure compliance with FRA Safety Standards and Amtrak specifications, as well as state and local ordinances. (20%) Analyze track geometry data to provide indices of track quality and the rates of track geometry deterioration. (20%) Provide track alignment and curve modification designs in support of capital improvement programs, and production work such as TLM, undercutting, and tamping solutions for various equipment. (20%) Support the operation of automated track inspection systems by improving the inspection technologies through the application of optical, inertial, and visual sensory systems, or similar advanced track inspection technologies. (15%) Use vehicle/track dynamics software such as SIMPACK, Vampire, or NUCARS to determine the dynamic load environment and vehicle response to track geometry. (5%) Develop analytical methods to assist in the development of the track geometry, ballast, subgrade, and drainage capital improvement programs ($20M annually). (15%) Develop and use analytical methods to investigate the root cause of track geometry degradation and determine appropriate remedial actions. (5%) Travel (up to 20%) required to work on projects at various, unanticipated sites throughout the United States. All positions require pre-employment background verification, medical review and pre-employment drug screen.

Requirements: Employer will accept Bachelors degree in Computer Science, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Civil Engineering, or related field and two years of work experience in job offered or two years of work experience in a related occupation. Experience may be gained concurrently. Education or experience must include:

  1. Database management and communication maintenance between various computer networks used in railroad infrastructure and train control systems;
  2. Statistical analysis and supervision of scoring algorithms used for railroad infrastructure capital maintenance planning;
  3. MATLAB, Python, R, or, Tableau for signal processing, data assimilation, data analytics, and visualization;
  4. Engineering project management, administration, and, planning/scheduling using MS Project and Excel;
  5. Experience reporting requirements for research environments and research-oriented projects;
  6. Experience in railroad signal and dispatching network administration;
  7. Railroad circuit design as applied in signal systems for track circuits and vehicle shunting analysis;
  8. Multi-body dynamics, vibration, or, modal analysis of numerically modeled systems;
  9. Design or use of sensory systems, with either: LIDAR, accelerometers, or, field sensors;
  10. Railroad signaling and train control workstation/server configuration and maintenance experience;
  11. Positive Train Control System, including ACSES, I-ETMS and control center operation;
  12. Structured telecommunications cabling infrastructure; and,
  13. Experience with RF, Telecom, and IP Network systems that support all areas of electrified railroad operation including SCADA and computer-aided dispatching.
