Director, Public Relations and Marketing Communications - District Office

FUNCTION: The Director, Public Relations and MarketingCommunications manages and leads the public relations and marketingcommunications team. The Director plans, develops, and implements theCollege's external public and media relations, marketing communications, socialmedia, email marketing, video strategy and execution, and internalcommunications activities. The position directs the strategy and execution ofthe public relations and marketing communications staff and coordinates publicand media relations strategies across the College.

The Director, Public Relations and MarketingCommunications collaborates closely with members of the College community toensure consistent and integrated use of the brand and communication messages,while overseeing the editorial strategy and voice. The position is responsiblefor creating, implementing, and measuring the success of the College's publicand media relations, social media, and email marketing efforts; and plans anddirects the editorial direction, design, and content for the College's majorexternal publications. The Director, Public Relations and MarketingCommunications, serves as the Deputy Public Information Officer in the event ofa College crisis.

Essential Job Functions:
  • Provide strategic direction for the College's publicrelations and marketing communications efforts. Manages the public relations andmarketing communications team to ensure message is consistent, timely, and relevantacross a diverse mix of media channels; and is aligned with the College'svision, mission, and goals.
  • Proactively seeks media coverage at the local,regional and national level through news releases, media pitches, and buildingrelationships with members of the media.
  • Provides communication counsel to College leadershipand creates communication plans for College events that align with overallCollege and marketing goals.
  • Facilitates internal communications withstudents, faculty and staff, overseeing the internal employee blog, TheWatercooler. Manages strategy and content for marketing emails, monthlye-newsletter, and the College's major external publications.
  • Proofreads and edits all news releases,publications, emails, videos, and graphic design projects, ensuring the contentmeets College and Associated Press Style standards.
  • Oversees social media strategy, using the socialmedia platforms to engage with College community.
  • Serve as the deputy Public Information Officer in the event of a College crisis.

Additional Job Functions:
  • Attend various College and campus meetings on behalf of the marketing, public relations and government affairs department.
  • Attend various advertising radio events, programs, and other public relations events as needed.
  • Attend various external College events as needed (such as chamber luncheons).

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Proven leadership / supervisory experience
  • Demonstrated writing skills for a variety of audiences (media, social media, website, internal) with a focus on Associated Press style
  • Organizational skills
  • Successful experience in media pitching and public relations processes
  • Ability to work collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders
  • Bilingual skills a plus

Note: This position has limited opportunity for remote work arrangements with appropriate approvals and in accordance with the policies, procedures, and needs of the College.

Salary Grade: 30

Salary is based on the Board-approved salary schedule for the current fiscal year. See Salary Schedule

Required Education:
  • Bachelor's degree in journalism, public relations, communications, or related field

Preferred Education:
  • Master's degree in journalism, public relations, communications or related field

Required Experience:
  • Five (5) years in writing and public relations /marketing communications
  • Five (5) years in a leadership / supervisory role

Preferred Experience:
  • Seven - ten (7-10) years in writing and public relations
  • Five (5) years in a supervisory role

Preferred Licenses/Certifications:
  • National Incident Management System (NIMS) Certifications (100, 200, 300, 400, 700, 800, PIO/JIC Training)
