The Director – Cybersecurity Technical Strategy will play a critical role in ensuring the cybersecurity of the world’s largest airline.  Cybersecurity at American is fast paced, globally complex and requires balancing the needs of a very dynamic business with evolving regulations and maturing applications all while fiercely protecting customer, employee, and American Airlines data.  

 

This is a new, innovative role that will guide the use and adoption of both existing and emerging technologies such as Cloud, data usage, IoT security and aircraft security.  American Airlines continues to invest in Cybersecurity, growing our capabilities and impact with high levels of support from and communication with our Board of Directors.  

 

The creation of this position is further evidence of the importance and investment in Cybersecurity at AA.  This position reports directly to the Chief Information Security Officer (CISO) within the Cybersecurity and Technology Risk Management organization.  The CISO reports directly to the CIO who reports to the CEO of American Airlines.  

 

This individual will be one of five key technical strategy leaders across IT and will work as a member of American’s Technical Strategy Group, a peer group chartered with formulating the overall approach to American Airlines technology direction.  This group advises the CIO and her leaders regarding critical technologies like Cloud and modern delivery processes like DevOps, Application Transformation.  The Director will facilitate strategic conversations with technical audiences while building confidence with business stakeholders.

 

This role will also collaborate with Cybersecurity and Technology leadership to define and evolve the direction of the Cyber services to ensure we are delivering security solutions and enabling their adoption across the Product and Application landscape.  The Director will help determine, in consult with key technology teams, required future state security capabilities.

 

What you'll do

  • Lead the evolution of current cyber technical strategies to fully embrace and secure American Airlines’ Cloud first, DevOps enabled direction. 
  • Continue to shift security left into the application space and increase secure development capabilities and practices.  
  • Design and define security architectures and policies, as well as automate them in a way that fits naturally with how application developers work.
  • Analyze market, understand emerging trends, shape our security strategy to apply these new modern trends into the technical ecosystem
  • Key influencer in the recruiting of technical cyber talent 
  • Lead and actively represent American Airlines in the Aviation – Information Sharing and Analysis Centers’ (A-ISAC) committees and influence industry direction
  • Provide expert Cybersecurity architecture viewpoints for all assigned strategies within enterprise level initiatives
  • Work hand in hand with Cybersecurity program management to ensure alignment with strategy and vision
  • Maintain regular engagement and proactive partnership with technology teams to ensure assigned strategies align with business and technical needs, requirements, and constraints
  • Support the Cyber Engagement activities by being an active participant in the Cyber Ninja outreach efforts, Cyber Policy Governance efforts, and Cybersecurity consulting activities
  • Provide expert input into the collective Cybersecurity strategy to ensure that future security investments are aligned appropriately when considering key priorities such as business and cyber risk and the evolving threat landscape
  • Partner with business and technology to provide expert security guidance into design and implementation of enterprise security capabilities

All you'll need for success

  • Demonstrates the highest level of ethics and integrity
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Technology , Information Systems (CIS/MIS), Engineering or related technical discipline, or equivalent experience/training
  • 10 years of cybersecurity strategy planning and security architecture design experience
  • Demonstrated relevant security expertise in designing security solutions for a mix of technology areas, with a focus on cloud and application security
  • Strong business acumen to quickly learn new business processes and understand how Cybersecurity can support the business’ goals
  • Proven experience identifying solutions for complex problems in enterprise environments
  • Robust knowledge of information security principles, frameworks (NIST CSF / 800-171, NIST Privacy, PCI and COBIT) and best practices and the ability to apply those principles in clear and articulate way to build support for IT Strategy
  • Proven ability to map and understand complex relationships and interactions between Enterprise Architecture, business direction, emerging trends, emerging technologies, and legacy systems
  • Proven ability to identify and develop clear and understandable security capabilities and strategic views from high-level business objectives and technology constraints
  • Superior problem solving, analytical, and critical thinking skills, with ability to be highly meticulous and detail-oriented
  • Ability to effectively and clearly communicate a strategic vision to both highly technical and non-technical audiences, both verbally and in written form
  • Ability to explain complex concepts in plain language and graphics
  • Ability to take ownership and responsibility for assigned strategies and champion them across the Cybersecurity and IT organization
  • Ability to be self-driven with a natural aptitude for engaging employees in multiple workgroups
  • Ability to influence through outstanding interpersonal skills, collaboration, and negotiation skills
  • Proven ability to pull a diverse group of individuals with different goals together to facilitate, moderate, and influence productive discussions driving towards results
  • Ability to adapt to unexpected events, new facts, and rapidly changing circumstances
