How This Role Contributes to Brighthouse Financial:

Reporting to the Chief Accounting Officer, the Controller is responsible for ensuring accurate consolidated results for Brighthouse Financial, Inc. and its subsidiaries for internal and external reporting.

This role will partner with, interface, and provide direct support to the CFO value creation roles including Planning & Analysis, Tax, Treasury and Investor Relations to track and report on our results as well as our target commitments to investors. Partnership and alignment with these department heads will be critical to maintain one source of the truth from Finance. This role will be responsible for the accuracy of the Management and Public Company Reporting, as well as financial information in marketing material, shareholder presentations, analyst material, debt/bond road show information and any outward facing disclosures of financial information. This role is also responsible for preparing management discussion and analysis for quarterly financial reporting and contributing to the shareholder and analyst community communications in conjunction with Investor Relations.

This role will lead, manage, and coach a team of skilled leaders, managers and accountants responsible for attributing and explaining the results on a quarterly basis (e.g. earnings releases, statistical supplement and analyst scripts). Ultimately this role is responsible for the accounting operations of the company, to include the production of periodic financial reports, maintenance of an adequate system of accounting records, and a comprehensive set of controls and accountabilities designed to mitigate risk, enhance the accuracy of the company's reported financial results, and ensure that reported results comply with accounting principles.

As a key member leading the finance portion of the technology future state initiative, this role will also be integral in supporting transition of administrative and actuarial transformation, driving modernization, and making the processes and reporting more efficient.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Develop relationships with counterparts across the enterprise to maintain communication and alignment, and to optimize efficiency in the reporting process.
  • Write consolidated Management Discussion and Analysis as well as other critical sections within the SEC 10-K and 10-Q filings.
  • Assure timely and accurate submissions of reporting deliverables, quarterly financial metrics and other management metrics.
  • Ensures established financial close deadlines are met while maintaining a controlled environment.
  • Manages activities to prepare financial reports to meet the requirements of outside regulators, rating agencies, investor events, insurance outlook, and board presentations.
  • Responsible for oversight of the Reinsurance subsidiary accounting and reporting team.
  • Provide/assist with accounting/reporting support and guidance on new product development and troubleshooting existing product accounting issues.
  • Evaluate, recommend, and implement improvements to financial reporting processes and output.
  • Lead project initiatives on process improvement and margin enhancement to maximize profitability and cash flow.
  • Make recommendations concerning business policy, resource allocation, financial goals, objectives, and systems to support growth of the company and improve financial performance.
  • Support CFOs organization through meetings and updates of results and resolution of accounting/reporting issues.
  • Present product/segment/company financial results and analysis to stakeholders. Establish and maintain procedures and internal controls over reporting activities to ensure that financial results are produced timely and accurately, free of material misstatements.
  • Supports internal and external audits and SOX team as required.
  • Engages and collaborates with Technical Accounting, Reinsurance, Valuation, Tax and other groups as necessary on research projects and investigations of a specialized nature
  • Lead or participate in special projects as required and ad-hoc work assignments.


Essential Business Experience and Technical Skills:
  • B.A./B.S. in Accounting/Finance or equivalent
  • 15+ years of progressively responsible experience within accounting and financial analysis
  • Strong record of success in leading teams and achieving business objectives, growth and efficiencies
  • Accomplished change management leader, able to operate effectively in a highly matrix environment.
  • CPA strongly preferred
  • Proficient in US GAAP and US Statutory (insurance accounting)
  • Knowledge of broker dealer accounting a plus
  • Knowledge of SAP a plus
  • Demonstrated strong problem-solving and analytical skills is critical
  • Strong leadership skills with the ability to work with and influence people at all levels across the enterprise.
  • Independent contributor in addition to providing oversight and management of assigned deliverables
  • Ability to produce results and carry out initiatives independently
