  • Purpose: Clinical social workers within the Outpatient Department of Psychiatry are vital members of the multi-disciplinary treatment teams. In collaboration with colleagues in mental health and primary care, they provide services to preschool, latency-age children, and adolescents across the spectrum of programs offered within the department. The diversity of the child/adolescent patient population served in addition to the treatment modalities utilized requires interdisciplinary expertise and collaboration. The training responsibilities are assigned by the Director of Social Work Training in accordance with the training needs of the Department.

    Job Responsibilities: Ability to develop rapport with diverse children and adolescents having mental and/or substance use disorders. Ability to assess children and adolescents for DSM5 disorders utilizing an understanding of normal child and adolescent development and a strengths-based parenting/family assessment model. Skill and prior experience in making triage decisions; in assessing risk including suicide, violence, and abuse/neglect; and in applying the multi-axial diagnostic classification accurately. Ability to develop individualized treatment plans utilizing a strengths-based approach with emphasis on improving symptoms and function within a developmental context using a full range of appropriate treatment modalities (such as crisis intervention, individual and group psychotherapy, family-based therapy, supportive therapy, intermittent therapy, and/or behavior therapy). Ability to provide clinical care to patients commonly seen in primary care and specialty mental health settings (including core disorders, such as mood or anxiety disorders; disruptive behavior disorders, adjustment disorders, post-traumatic stress disorder, and/or substance use; severe and persistent mental disorders; social skills deficits and developmental delays; and family system conflicts associated with parenting dilemmas.) Knowledge, skill and experience in at least two core areas of psychosocial treatment (e.g. psychodynamic therapy, play therapy, family-based therapy, short-term therapy, cognitive-behavior therapy, dialectical behavior therapy, problem-oriented therapy, group psychotherapy, or other evidence-based approaches), with a commitment to continuing professional growth by development of new clinical skills and mastery of additional techniques. Participation in quality improvement initiatives with opportunities, on occasion, to join clinical research efforts.


Qualifications:

Education/Training: Masters degree

Social Work Licensure: Current MA licensure as LICSW (Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker). LCSW (Licensed Certified Social Worker) considered with eligibility for licensure of LICSW within one year.

Bilingual in Portuguese or Spanish strongly preferred.

Experience in short-term and behaviorally-oriented therapies (e.g., cognitive behavioral therapy, trauma focused-CBT, dialectical behavior therapy, parent management training) is preferred.
