General Purpose

To further the spiritual and religious mission of the Catholic Church's call to minister to the poor and vulnerable, the Family Life Coach provides emergency intake/assessment of client needs and voluntary comprehensive, coordinated case management services to families experiencing instability. The Life Coach will offer education and support services to parents, using strength-based practices. Responsibilities include conducting intake and initial/follow-up assessments; working cooperatively with other agencies to link families to financial services and community resources that meet the parents' expressed needs; and providing direct services and accurate data entry to track and record contacts. Flexible schedule required as this position will provide case management support when needed to families experiencing economic or family instability, including homelessness, or at risk of homelessness through both the Family Resource Center (FRC) and Family Mentor Alliance (FMA) programs; and crisis stabilization support as part of staff rotation to address emergency services.

Essential Duties/Responsibilities

  • Conduct intake screenings and assessments for families who are seeking emergency services, including homeless prevention supports in order to maintain current housing situation.
  • Provide emergency case management efforts to include intake, initial needs assessments, and financial assistance funds for eligible clients as assigned by the Family Connections Director.
  • Engage and interview families for program enrollment and provide needs assessment using the CFSA2. Offer case management services, and follow-up contacts to assess goal attainment and need for further referrals. Manage a case load of 5-8 families at a time.
  • Follow-up contacts to assess goal attainment and need for further referrals and providing resources that may not be available in the community such as, financial planning, parenting skills and communication skills.
  • Develop effective case plans for families regarding parenting skills, family problems, economic stressors, parent/child relationships and community connectedness. Work toward keeping children safe in their home and the community. Participate in ongoing training and be responsible for following Quality Standards for Family Strengthening & Support and Trauma-Informed Care.
  • Provide advocacy to entities involved with family, based on family needs, including but not limited to welfare and public benefit agencies, landlords, and educational entities.
  • Maintain accurate reports and databases of client demographics and services provided for clients.
  • Collect, manage and report on all data related to clients served including relevant data entry systems and maintain thorough, accurate, and reliable program statistics and reports.
  • Liaison between internal supports and strategic partner agencies, soliciting their support to obtain/make appropriate referrals to families needing services.
  • Continuing education is required to enhance the effectiveness of the programs. Participate in available trainings and remain current on homelessness, poverty and related issues.

  • Good computer skills, including word processing and ability and to learn Salesforce platform and other databases.
  • Ability to manage multiple crisis/service requests and needs presented daily by families.
  • Knowledge of family dynamics, systems theory, domestic violence, and social work theory/ practice.
  • Ability to engage, foster, and maintain effective working relationships with a broad variety of families.
  • Knowledgeable and understanding of Trauma Informed Care principles/practices and Motivational Interviewing, and/or will take initiative toward self-directed learning of these.
  • Knowledge of child development and strength-based family support practices and ability to use these practices when working with families and co-workers.
  • Knowledge of social issues such as poverty, gender bias, domestic violence, alcohol and other drug abuse, child maltreatment prevention, cultural diversity, etc.
  • Knowledge of community resources and systems.
  • Ability to demonstrate commitment to developing community members' potential, prosperity and protection with demonstrated understanding of cultural awareness.

Work Environment

  • A majority of the assigned duties are performed in an office environment.

FLSA Classification


  • Bachelor's degree in Human Services, Social Work or related field, or a combination of experience and/or education equal to two years.
  • Two years of full-time experience working with direct client/family interaction.
  • Bilingual English/Spanish preferred.
  • Transportation and valid driver's license required.
  • Demonstrated ability to apply culturally appropriate skills in interactions with clients, co-workers, volunteers, partner agencies, and other community members.
  • Excellent communication (verbal and written), problem solving, listening, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to form and maintain positive work relationships.
  • Ability and willingness to work within the established structure of Catholic Charities and a Family Development approach strengthening families and building support systems.
  • Occasional evenings and weekends are required to accommodate meetings and special events.
