The Media Lab is a community of inventors who work atelier style as members of research teams, doing the things that conventional wisdom says can’t or shouldn't be done.  Students come to the Media Lab through the graduate Program in Media Arts and Sciences (MAS), based within MIT’s School of Architecture and Planning.  Enrollment in the program ranges from 160-180 graduate students (masters and doctoral) with backgrounds from computer and biological sciences, to engineering and AI, to sonic and visual design.

The Assistant Director, Student Support and Diversity will provide administrative leadership and implementation of efforts to recruit and support our MAS graduate students including efforts to enhance the representation and experience of women and underrepresented minority students in the MAS program and at the Media Lab.

Responsibilities:

 

  • Working closely with the Head of the MAS Program and the Director of Academic Program Administration, advise MAS students and outside RAs on a case-by-case basis regarding concerns ranging from the personal to the academic; offer referrals to external resources as appropriate.
  • Manage MAS recruitment and student enrollment.
  • Create opportunities for students to provide feedback (i.e. climate survey, town hall meetings).
  • Work with faculty and MAS leadership to resolve student issues.
  • Engage faculty in student support work, including exposing them to campus resources.
  • Strategize and create policies that facilitate student success (i.e. child care subsidy, hardship fund, childbirth accommodation).
  • Manage the MAS Visiting Student Program.
  • Manage the MAS Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP).
  • Support student representative and affinity groups.
  • -dministrative lead on all large-scale MAS events: orientation, open house, conferences/workshops, preview weekend, grad student appreciation week, MAS Commencement, etc.
  • Engage with PI admins to better support students (i.e. connecting one-on-one, hosting relevant trainings/workshops).
  • Represent MAS on Institute committees as appropriate.
  • Work as back-up to the Director of Academic Program Administration and assist with MAS communications.

 

Diversity

  • Work with MAS leadership to design and implement a strategy to increase awareness of and applications to the MAS Master’s program and support the recruitment, development, and retention of a diverse student body.
  • Organize the Media Lab/MAS Diversity Committee, in collaboration with Media Lab HR.
  • Assist in the recruitment of women and underrepresented minority students, including attending or arranging for representation of the program at appropriate conferences, events, and undergraduate programs, and assist in designing opportunities to bring prospective students to the Media Lab.
  • Develop effective promotional materials and channels, electronic and otherwise.
  • Review applications of women and underrepresented minority students and track them throughout the admissions process, as well as work on student retention.
  • Collect and help analyze data on applications, admission, and enrollment to identify trends and opportunities.
  • Act as the primary liaison to MIT’s Office of the Dean for Graduate Education concerning student diversity and inclusion and student services, and use available MIT resources to help achieve the goals of MAS/Media Lab in these areas.
  • Support the MIT Summer Research Program’s relationship with MAS, including reviewing applications, working with faculty on intern placement, one-on-one meetings with interns, and incorporating interns into the bigger Media Lab community.
  • Collaborate with the SA&P Assistant Dean for Diversity, Equity and Belonging, and Student Support on school-wide initiatives.
  • Work with MAS leadership to develop and manage budget to support goals.
  • Prepare and disseminate the Year-in-Review report on MAS activities, with emphasis on Diversity and Community activities.

Requirements

REQUIRED:

  • At least three years of experience with and track record in student support services, including experience with pipeline initiatives and enrollment management practices designed to support the recruitment, retention, and graduation of students of diverse backgrounds.
  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • Background in STEAM fields or higher education.
  • Experience in planning events. 
  • Sensitive to organizational dynamics with the ability to build and foster relationships within MAS and the Lab, as well as with colleagues at MIT.
  • Superb written and verbal communication and presentation skills.
  • Self-starter and team player who possesses initiative, versatility, flexibility.
  • Demonstrated ability to anticipate issues, analyze data, and solve problems creatively and effectively.
  • Ability to handle varied tasks concurrently in a fast-paced and sometimes pressured setting.
  • Discretion and ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Must be willing to travel and be available for occasional evenings and/or weekends.
  • Facility with standard office software applications and database tools.

 

PREFERRED:

  • Master’s degree preferred;
  • Experience with both DEI initiatives and Student Services preferred.
